Lights, Audio, and Video in a Luxe Philadelphia Apartment

We recently outfitted a brand new Center City Philadelphia apartment with the latest in audio, video, and lighting technology. The goal was to make everything available to the client at the touch of a button, without compromising the vision of the designers and architects.

Check out our full recap of the project in the video and photos below!

Everything right in its place.

Our client's vision for the apartment was to add speakers, TVs, and automation in a way that would disappear into their newly decorated space. To make this happen, we pre-wired everything during the construction phase. This also allowed us to easily hardwire seven Sony 4K TVs and multiple zones of ceiling speakers from Bowers & Wilkins.

All of the in-ceiling speakers throughout the home are driven by three AudioControl Architect 16-channel amplifiers, with the exception of the living room. We used an Integra DTR-70.6 11.2 Channel Dolby Atmos receiver to drive those in-ceiling speakers and create a really immersive surround sound experience for movie nights.

The backbone of a good AV control and automation system is the network. We strategically mounted four Ruckus wireless access points in the ceiling to not only hide them, but also deliver the best Wi-Fi coverage in every corner of the apartment.

Setting the mood with lighting.

The client wanted equally dramatic lighting, so we installed a Lutron HomeWorks QS system with keypads. Then we programmed various lighting settings to make it easy for him to quickly change the lighting to suit his mood.

In some areas, we installed Lutron Grafik T dimmers, which are controlled from a single LED lightbar. Since there are no buttons, sliders, or knobs, the client can adjust brightness levels with the swipe of a finger.

The brains behind the scenes.

A Savant home automation system serves as the brains of the new setup. The software coordinates control of everything — all of the audio, video, and lighting components — through an intuitive universal remote or mobile app. Whether the client wants to channel surf, binge watch Netflix, or turn down the lights and listen to music, it's all done with a push of a button from one app on his iPhone.

Since floor space was at a premium and the client wanted to maintain the aesthetic of the home, we made use of a centrally located supply closet to house 2 AV racks, along with lighting controls for the entire apartment. The racks also house all of the client's TV sources, including cables boxes, Apple TVs, and HDMI extenders to get the sources out to all seven TVs.

In the end, the client was thrilled with the final result!
