One Subwoofer to Rule Them All

An unrelenting passion for awesome bass performance and engineering perfection guided every aspect of the SB16-Ultra subwoofer’s design. Groundbreaking technology, rigorous design, and extreme testing in real world and laboratory environments allowed SVS to achieve massive output levels, extreme low frequency extension, near-perfect frequency response accuracy, and pinpoint transient response. The culmination of all SVS design advancements, SB16-Ultra represents the greatest leap forward in performance and innovation since the inception of subwoofers.

Massive New 16" SVS Ultra Driver with Unprecedented 8" Edge Wound Voice Coil

When designing the biggest and most formidable driver ever used in an SVS subwoofer, it was of utmost importance to meet or exceed the same supreme standards of control and accuracy as every other subwoofer SVS manufactures. One huge advancement that allows the SB16-Ultra to handle the crushing force of a 16” driver is the 8” edge wound voice coil, the largest ever deployed in a consumer subwoofer. This innovation ensures ultra-low distortion and pinpoint control at the highest drive levels resulting in incredible output and low frequency extension. By nature, larger drivers are more difficult to control, but the unprecedented voice coil design ensures accuracy in frequency response and speed in transients without ever sounding boomy.

Pushing the driver are four massive, dedicated toroidal ferrite magnets that unleash a staggering 78mm peak to peak Xmech excursion (65mm Xmax) and the highest levels of motor force and palpable SPLs. The light and rigid 16” Ultra driver cone consists of a premium fiberglass resin composite with optimal stiffness to mass ratio to maximize movement of air and sonic energy without ever distorting or losing control.

Stunningly Powerful, New Sledge Amplifier with Fully Discrete MOSFET Output

Conservatively rated at 1,500 watts continuous, 5,000+ watts peak power, the SB16-Ultra Sledge STA-1500D amplifier’s 64 Amp 200-Volt MOSFETs are the sonic muscle behind arguably the most powerful and highest fidelity subwoofer amplifier ever developed. Discrete MOSFET output unbridles the nearly limitless power in the Sledge amplifier and pushes the 16” driver to extreme levels of performance. They also represent an upgrade over the less robust integrated circuit output stages found in nearly all other Class D subwoofer amplifiers.

Effortless power must be harnessed to ensure refined behavior and pristine output at the most demanding drive levels. To achieve this, the SB16-Ultra subwoofer uses the audio industry’s most advanced 50 MHz Analog Devices Audio DSP with 56bit filtering to handle the nearly limitless power, only unleashing the perfect amount of low frequency energy at just the right time.

Innovative New Smartphone App for Subwoofer DSP and Control

Compatible with Apple and Android platforms, the innovative SB16-Ultra smartphone app unleashes the full depth, force and nuance of the world’s finest subwoofer. The groundbreaking SVS subwoofer app controls all DSP functions and conveniently stores custom presets. It’s the easiest way ever to fine tune bass surpassing 16Hz at reference volumes from the comfort of your favorite seat.

For added convenience, 2-way feedback shows updates in real time on both the app and subwoofer interface, and Bluetooth connectivity allows adjustments to be made even when the subwoofer is not in sight. Control is also available via IR remote and an intuitive front panel display.

Acoustically Inert, Rigidly Braced Cabinet

A subwoofer capable of creating such extreme levels of sonic energy requires an equally robust cabinet design. The SB16-Ultra is built with a double-thick MDF front baffle and rigid internal bracing to support the massive drive unit and to ensure an acoustically inert environment. The highly reinforced internal design eliminates any chance of coloration or resonance from the cabinet, even when the deepest low frequencies are played at reference sound pressure levels.

Jim's review - November 22
My SB16 Ultra that arrived yesterday, 11/21/16, was packed in a very user-friendly way. Not that I recommend it, but I had no problem at all positioning the sub next to one of the Cornwall III main speakers on my own. Mine is a mostly analog 2 channel music system, with direct heated single ended triodes for the main amp. No LFE system here. If you don’t know about them, the Klipsch speakers of this type can be hard for a sub to keep up with (yes even with a wimpy tube amp driving them), and our house is very open – the music/living room opens up on huge areas to compound the challenge.

Once in position and hooked up, I took 2 minutes and enabled the Bluetooth link, set a few parameters and put on some music. Clean, effortless, musical bass blended right into the main speakers – the sub ‘disappeared’. Integration with the mains was effortless. I am sure I can do some tuning with the Radio Shack meter and a frequency CD, or the Behringer DEQ 2496, but that is strictly frosting on this cake. String bass as well as hard rock brought out new music already, without further tuning (i.e., without even using the 3 nice PEQs that are on my app).

The sub (ours is piano black) is a beautiful piece of furniture. The wife really appreciates the SB16 for its looks, especially compared with the pair of subs that used to occupy our room. This slaughtered what I had there before.

Recommended without reservation by a true audio lover.

The SB-16 Ultra has replaced a pair of Thiel Smartsub SW-1 subwoofers in my main system. The SB-16 Ultra is one fifth the price of the Thiel pair, yet its performance leaves the Thiels in the dust. The extension, freedom from distortion, maximum volume below 30Hz, and overall sense of speed are truly outstanding. Unlike the Thiels, the amplifier in the SB-16 Ultra is totally noise-free with no signal, yet it is able to deliver thunderous low frequencies when called upon. Plus the integration with the room is made so much easier with the SVS app. This subwoofer provides amazing performance at an unbelievable price. My highest praise to the SVS engineers!

This is it! Most musical subsonic subwoofer period
I was looking for a subwoofer to pair with my Martin Logan Motion 60xt speakers to complete my new 2 channel audio system. I had tried couple of subwoofers from Cambridge Soundworks, Bose, Harman Kardon, but none of them were able to blend seamlessly with Motion 60XT. They all sounded kind of boomy, not quite musical and lacked low subsonic shock waves. Please note that I am not a bass head and do not listen my music at high audio volume; as a responsible neighbor, I keep my audio volume within 80-90 db (sound level meter). I yearn for realistic sound which will make me feel like I am seating at the concert and able to hear every instrument clearly. Martin Logan motion 60XT reproduces everything in exceptional fidelity from 20K to 60Hz and its folded motion tweeters are unreal realistic. However like any high quality tower speaker, it cannot produce much under 60Hz where lies the very important segment of low and subsonic frequency from Kickdrum, bass guitar, lowest notes of organ etc. which not only to be heard but also to be felt in the body. Only a well-constructed subwoofer can product that frequency range.

I was initially hesitant to order SB16 as I was afraid it might be over powering and may be too heavy to move it around, but then I was totally sold out by its ability to be tuned and controlled from my Smartphone/remote control real-time while listening to it. That is huge to me, as I do not use any EQ or tone control between my preamp and power amp to keep the music signal pristine, it is absolutely necessary for me to control the subwoofer volume occasionally to compensate the amount of bass in the music. How awesome it will be to fine tune the subwoofer volume, phase, polarity, Low pass filter, even parametric EQ from my sofa while listening to it in real-time! That is a killer feature which prompted me to make the purchase.

FedEx delivered the huge box at my door step and with some muscle power and well guided instructions printed on the packing box I was able to unpack and connect it with my Rotel 1570 amp paired with Cambridge Azure 851n High Def music player. Initially the default SB16 factory setting was not sounding any better than my previous subwoofers. Then I opened up SVS Merlin tool from their website for recommended Low pass setting for Martin Logan 60XT. Once I dialed in 60 Hz low pass frequency using the tiny SVS remote control, the sound improved dramatically, now that it what I was expecting. Next, I gradually increased the SB16 phase from 0 degree and found the sweet spot at 87 degrees with positive polarity using SVS app running in my iPad. The sub-sonic becomes most prominent in my room setting.

Few days later and several hours of usage, SB16 sound has become more mellow and I know it will continue to be mellower in next few months. What I love about SB16 sound is: it feels like coming straight out of kick drum or the bass guitar, absolutely natural musical sound. It blends seamlessly with Martin Logan Motion 60XT. Last night I have streamed "Amazon" by Meyham from Spotify through Cambridge Azure and floored by the subsonic shockwaves generated from SB16. One word of caution, be very afraid of the sheer power SB16 subwoofer, I am sure it is capable of doing some serious structural damage to your room if fed with subsonic sound at full volume!

I am really glad that I have made this purchase and enjoying my stereo to its fullest. I will recommend it to anyone who loves Hi Fidelity sound in a heartbeat.

This is an amazing subwoofer! I have a rather high end system, and the subwoofer that the Ultra replaced seemed more than adequate but the Ultra has changed everything! I can hear the subtle nuances in the low end like never before, and can also rock the house off its foundation if I choose. Thank You SVS!

Upgraded from a pair of SB13s to a pair of SB16s. Upgrade was well worth it. When compared, the SB16 has more output at lower frequencies, is faster, looks better and sounds better when listening to music or watching movies just to name few. The SB13 is a great sub with few minor flaws in today's age: display located in the back, no remote control and no app. SVS addressed all of those lacking features to the new sub, which in my opinion, makes the SB16 one of the best subs out there. I wouldn't expect anything less from SVS. Once you purchase one of their products, you can only expect great performance and that speaks volume.

I would also like to make a point regarding SVS's excellent Customer Services!! Their team is always responsive to any inquiries I have had.

A worthy successor to the SB13 Ultra!
I got the SB13 about a year ago to replace an older, undersized, sub. It was a big improvement over the previous. I was happy with it, but it lacked a little in the subsonic, i.e. couch shaking, frequencies. To be fair, my room is fairly large at approximately 16'x30', and I likely should've bought dual 13's. The SB16 is everything I was missing! It plays much deeper, clearer, and cleaner. I was expecting an improvement over the 13, but I wasn't expecting how much of a difference it would make. I am very happy with the purchase, especially given SVS's upgrade program that made it only an incremental cost.

Connected a couple in a very large open room (over 10k ft and they played effortlessness) the sound cannot be described you have to hear it for yourself, if you don't own one then please do yourself a favor go and demo it somewhere. the bass was super tight never heard anything like it with amazing accuracy, not only that but i started to hear new sounds from the same movies that i watched before in addition it only plays when it needs to then the next second it's super quiet like it's turned off. each was set at -25 then calibrated using Audyssey XT32, thy don't need to be run hot (A few DB extra) to hear/feel them. and if you do decide to run them a bit louder then be prepared to what you are going to hear, they have the power to shatter glass and break windows, and i am not kidding. I have owned several well-made subs in the past from Jamo,Paradigm,Boston Acoustics,Atlantic Technology and others but this is way above the rest, it isn't even a fair competition it's like comparing a 4 cylinder car to a V12. Worth every $, this is a very well-made product, the mobile application is super easy to get used to and works right away no hassle or headache here and the packaging was great and super tough ready to be shipped anywhere.

So Ridiculously Beautiful
Stunning design and the most beautiful sound I ever heard. I cannot comprehend how people could have the nerve to say it's expensive. For what you are getting, its worth AT LEAST double the price. I simply can't get my eyes off of them (ya, I have 2 SVS SB16 Ultra Subwoofers) because of its gorgeous glossy finish and beautiful design with its massive 16" driver. These subwoofers sound so incredible that you have to hear to believe. Well, you still might not believe even after hearing it lol. These people are SERIOUS about true sound. I love the SB16 Ultras sound, color, size, looks, weight, phone app, features etc. By the way, SVS customer service is second to none. Their customer service is as good as their Subwoofers lol. No wonder people say "Superb Customer Service ". I agree 200%.
I owe my deepest gratitude to Jeff, Tim and John. These people REALLY have serious knowledge and are sooo fun to talk to. Every time I called, they were more than patient with me, kind, professional, extremely friendly, and walk every step of the set-up with me. Its literally like calling your best friend to talk to (but with more Knowledge lol). I highly recommend SVS SB16 Ultra to anyone who is serious and passionate about true and pure sound.

Thank You

Finally took the plunge and purchased a world class subwoofer
I have had my new SB16-Ultra for about three weeks. I still have some work to do in order to find the ideal location for it, but it's not a high priority to do that right now because it already has more performance and is creating a more beautiful listening experience than ever expected.

For five years I had been trying to re-create the sound quality created by an old-school Velodyne that would have cost at least $3k to replace. This allows me to not only re-create, but to obliterate that sound quality experience. I had gone down the road of using lower end dual klipsch subs that had a combined RMS of 300 watts. So now I have 5x that with peak of 5000w.

The sound for movies: the bomb! The sound for music: Reference! I have been playing my sons classical organ music, and he is amazed with all of the low frequency content that is so crystal clear.

I am very, very happy. Another bonus is the remote app. I can change the volume for movies, cable TV channels, or turn it way down when the family is in bed at night. The is a great plus for my wife.

Excellent Product - Highest Recommendation
I have had a relatively high-end Home Theater set-up for the past few years which included an SVS SB13-Ultra Subwoofer a component I considered an excellent part of the system. As such, when SVS came out with their new SVS SB16-Ultra Subwoofer the question I had was whether it would make a significant difference in my systems overall sound. Having now had the SB16 for a week with the opportunity to compare it against the smaller SB13 the answer is a very clear "yes".

To be fair to what is truly an excellent product in the SB13, both models are very fast and clear even in the lowest portions of the sound register. In playing one against the other, however, the SB16 separated itself from the SB 13 in several regards. First off, for relatively simple recordings of rock, jazz, and pop (i.e., 3-5 instruments) the SB16 was a bit more accurate so that you heard a "cleaner" version of what the musicians had recorded. That in itself was a nice and pleasant surprise. As I moved on to more complex music such as more heavily instrumented rock, anything that had a heavier drum/bass line, and full orchestras (whether playing music discs or within the score of a movie), the SB16 made an even greater difference in that the overall sound of my system became quite a bit fuller and more "immersive" with the new, larger unit. There was nothing subtle about this change in that the system took a major step forward in its ability to provide that you are there experience that I am always trying to achieve with our set-up. Finally, and with regard to the various "effects" that take place in movies (e.g., stuff blowing up, helicopters moving overhead, stuff getting smashed) their was no question that the SB16 provided a dramatically fuller sense of in-your-face action a critical aspect of achieving an excellent home theater experience.

So, overall, the SB16 truly was a significant upgrade over its "smaller cousin" subwoofer and an upgrade I decided was well worth the cost difference between the two models. When you consider that all the SVS subwoofers seem to achieve excellent reviews for performance and price-value (not to mention the companys strong service and support),you can't really go wrong with any of their models. If you are trying to match a high-end subwoofer to a set of high-end speakers, however, the SB16 is something you really need to hear. Having listened to many speakers and subwoofers over the years, this is without question a special product that will be a critical part of our family home theater for years to come. Very highly recommended
