One Subwoofer to Rule Them All
An unrelenting passion for awesome bass performance and engineering perfection guided every aspect of the SB16-Ultra subwoofer’s design. Groundbreaking technology, rigorous design, and extreme testing in real world and laboratory environments allowed SVS to achieve massive output levels, extreme low frequency extension, near-perfect frequency response accuracy, and pinpoint transient response. The culmination of all SVS design advancements, SB16-Ultra represents the greatest leap forward in performance and innovation since the inception of subwoofers.
Massive New 16" SVS Ultra Driver with Unprecedented 8" Edge Wound Voice Coil
When designing the biggest and most formidable driver ever used in an SVS subwoofer, it was of utmost importance to meet or exceed the same supreme standards of control and accuracy as every other subwoofer SVS manufactures. One huge advancement that allows the SB16-Ultra to handle the crushing force of a 16” driver is the 8” edge wound voice coil, the largest ever deployed in a consumer subwoofer. This innovation ensures ultra-low distortion and pinpoint control at the highest drive levels resulting in incredible output and low frequency extension. By nature, larger drivers are more difficult to control, but the unprecedented voice coil design ensures accuracy in frequency response and speed in transients without ever sounding boomy.
Pushing the driver are four massive, dedicated toroidal ferrite magnets that unleash a staggering 78mm peak to peak Xmech excursion (65mm Xmax) and the highest levels of motor force and palpable SPLs. The light and rigid 16” Ultra driver cone consists of a premium fiberglass resin composite with optimal stiffness to mass ratio to maximize movement of air and sonic energy without ever distorting or losing control.
Stunningly Powerful, New Sledge Amplifier with Fully Discrete MOSFET Output
Conservatively rated at 1,500 watts continuous, 5,000+ watts peak power, the SB16-Ultra Sledge STA-1500D amplifier’s 64 Amp 200-Volt MOSFETs are the sonic muscle behind arguably the most powerful and highest fidelity subwoofer amplifier ever developed. Discrete MOSFET output unbridles the nearly limitless power in the Sledge amplifier and pushes the 16” driver to extreme levels of performance. They also represent an upgrade over the less robust integrated circuit output stages found in nearly all other Class D subwoofer amplifiers.
Effortless power must be harnessed to ensure refined behavior and pristine output at the most demanding drive levels. To achieve this, the SB16-Ultra subwoofer uses the audio industry’s most advanced 50 MHz Analog Devices Audio DSP with 56bit filtering to handle the nearly limitless power, only unleashing the perfect amount of low frequency energy at just the right time.
Innovative New Smartphone App for Subwoofer DSP and Control
Compatible with Apple and Android platforms, the innovative SB16-Ultra smartphone app unleashes the full depth, force and nuance of the world’s finest subwoofer. The groundbreaking SVS subwoofer app controls all DSP functions and conveniently stores custom presets. It’s the easiest way ever to fine tune bass surpassing 16Hz at reference volumes from the comfort of your favorite seat.
For added convenience, 2-way feedback shows updates in real time on both the app and subwoofer interface, and Bluetooth connectivity allows adjustments to be made even when the subwoofer is not in sight. Control is also available via IR remote and an intuitive front panel display.
Acoustically Inert, Rigidly Braced Cabinet
A subwoofer capable of creating such extreme levels of sonic energy requires an equally robust cabinet design. The SB16-Ultra is built with a double-thick MDF front baffle and rigid internal bracing to support the massive drive unit and to ensure an acoustically inert environment. The highly reinforced internal design eliminates any chance of coloration or resonance from the cabinet, even when the deepest low frequencies are played at reference sound pressure levels.

Customer Reviews for SVS SB16-Ultra 1500 Watt DSP Controlled 16" Subwoofer
Once in position and hooked up, I took 2 minutes and enabled the Bluetooth link, set a few parameters and put on some music. Clean, effortless, musical bass blended right into the main speakers – the sub ‘disappeared’. Integration with the mains was effortless. I am sure I can do some tuning with the Radio Shack meter and a frequency CD, or the Behringer DEQ 2496, but that is strictly frosting on this cake. String bass as well as hard rock brought out new music already, without further tuning (i.e., without even using the 3 nice PEQs that are on my app).
The sub (ours is piano black) is a beautiful piece of furniture. The wife really appreciates the SB16 for its looks, especially compared with the pair of subs that used to occupy our room. This slaughtered what I had there before.
Recommended without reservation by a true audio lover.
I was initially hesitant to order SB16 as I was afraid it might be over powering and may be too heavy to move it around, but then I was totally sold out by its ability to be tuned and controlled from my Smartphone/remote control real-time while listening to it. That is huge to me, as I do not use any EQ or tone control between my preamp and power amp to keep the music signal pristine, it is absolutely necessary for me to control the subwoofer volume occasionally to compensate the amount of bass in the music. How awesome it will be to fine tune the subwoofer volume, phase, polarity, Low pass filter, even parametric EQ from my sofa while listening to it in real-time! That is a killer feature which prompted me to make the purchase.
FedEx delivered the huge box at my door step and with some muscle power and well guided instructions printed on the packing box I was able to unpack and connect it with my Rotel 1570 amp paired with Cambridge Azure 851n High Def music player. Initially the default SB16 factory setting was not sounding any better than my previous subwoofers. Then I opened up SVS Merlin tool from their website for recommended Low pass setting for Martin Logan 60XT. Once I dialed in 60 Hz low pass frequency using the tiny SVS remote control, the sound improved dramatically, now that it what I was expecting. Next, I gradually increased the SB16 phase from 0 degree and found the sweet spot at 87 degrees with positive polarity using SVS app running in my iPad. The sub-sonic becomes most prominent in my room setting.
Few days later and several hours of usage, SB16 sound has become more mellow and I know it will continue to be mellower in next few months. What I love about SB16 sound is: it feels like coming straight out of kick drum or the bass guitar, absolutely natural musical sound. It blends seamlessly with Martin Logan Motion 60XT. Last night I have streamed "Amazon" by Meyham from Spotify through Cambridge Azure and floored by the subsonic shockwaves generated from SB16. One word of caution, be very afraid of the sheer power SB16 subwoofer, I am sure it is capable of doing some serious structural damage to your room if fed with subsonic sound at full volume!
I am really glad that I have made this purchase and enjoying my stereo to its fullest. I will recommend it to anyone who loves Hi Fidelity sound in a heartbeat.
I would also like to make a point regarding SVS's excellent Customer Services!! Their team is always responsive to any inquiries I have had.
For five years I had been trying to re-create the sound quality created by an old-school Velodyne that would have cost at least $3k to replace. This allows me to not only re-create, but to obliterate that sound quality experience. I had gone down the road of using lower end dual klipsch subs that had a combined RMS of 300 watts. So now I have 5x that with peak of 5000w.
The sound for movies: the bomb! The sound for music: Reference! I have been playing my sons classical organ music, and he is amazed with all of the low frequency content that is so crystal clear.
I am very, very happy. Another bonus is the remote app. I can change the volume for movies, cable TV channels, or turn it way down when the family is in bed at night. The is a great plus for my wife.
I finally turned up my system (marantz sr7011) and was blown away, I played music, watched movies, it was all good. The best thing that happened was going to the main level, and turning up the music to 74 on my dial, and having a family dance party for about 10 different songs from hip hop to pop to electronic (and even Let it go from Frozen). The music was clear, the bass was crisp when it needed to be and boomed when you expected it. I smiled from ear to ear.
It is awesome! It also makes me chuckle when I see it because it is bigger than what my wife would have wanted had she seen it on display at the store or at someones house. However, the above experiences have eliminated any complaining about its size from her.
I used Merlin and it suggested the SB13 Ultra. I called in to SVS and was surprised at how quick I was routed to a live body who was more than acceptably knowledgable and capable of servicing any request from sales to support (what a rare, rare treat with no hold time no less). The advisor said given my room the SB13 would be plenty but I couldn't go wrong with the SB16 Ultra. What had me thinking of perhaps keeping the size down was primarily driven by my love for super fast, tight bass. Its what drove me to select a passive radiator design the first time around along with selecting the 10" vs the 12". I pulled the trigger on the SB16 Ultra and immediately I was shocked. Without breaking out the measurement microphone and calibration software it was readily apparent from the first track that any concerns about musicality were unfounded. After spending 15 minutes with the truly excellent Bluetooth app, a tone generator, and the measurement microphone/PC analysis software I had it dialed in with none of the weirdness in performance that affected the Polk sub quiet or loud the output was super consistent and great anywhere in the room. up to about 95 DB or below anywhere in the tested frequencies, the SB16 Ultra was WELL within the tolerances for sensitivity of the microphone in my designated position. Its astonishing how well the backend of this sub is programmed. I wouldn't expect this kind of performance at any price point. Better still is just how seamlessly it blends with my mains whether I am listening at whisper quiet levels, typical reference, open up the house while listening from the furthest reaches of my suburban plot, or anywhere in between. It is never drawing attention to itself. The system always sounds perfectly blended and cohesive in presentation.
That said, I put in the Blu-Ray of The Dark Knight rises and, I kid you not, had blown out the seals on my three windows’ seals. They all started fogging up after that movie run and I had my buddy at the glass shop pull them and reseal. He was all grins when I played the airplane sequence at the beginning of said movie and told him my theory of how their state came to pass. He agreed with me. Fwiw and in conclusion this sub is the real deal. I cannot overstate its pedigree for either movies or music. In particular its musical performance was by far the higher priority to me and it has not disappointed. The SB16 Ultra exceeds what I thought was possible, is seemingly just as fast, tight, and consistent as my headphone rigs but in the wide open and through deafening assured levels.
Buy with confidence.
