Happy with it after lots of tuning. Good customer support
Big, heavy, high power, high quality sub with pleasing full bodied sound. Even with some aspects I don't love, I would buy again. I wanted BIG bass for stereo music (not home theatre) and simply could not find anything in stores that provided both the quality and quantity of bass I craved. It was hard to spend over $2000 and deal with the logistics of the big set up for something I had never heard and might not like, but both the SVS marketing and their generous return policy were persuasive. While all the sealed subs I shopped for in stores were incapable of providing enough bass, I was worried that a huge ported sub like the PB-16 could be too muddy or slow for music. SVS provides some excellent guidance from their website, YouTube Videos and informative customer service staff. Tuning with the port plugs, tuning with the slope, tuning with the gain, working with their nice phone app, lots of experimenting with room placement and after hours of thinking and adjusting I've got excellent quantity of volume of sound and good quality. At first I didn't like the big lighted digital info in front, nor did I like the grill. In real world experience having the phone app to adjust and then getting visual confirmation of adjustments on the sub is nice. If you go back and forth between ages and styles of music with various recording levels, adjusting the sub is very easy with the app. Plus you can make the invasive lights go to sleep. Steel grill, I still think it's ugly and wanted something more elegant looking, however that SVS truck grill is very effectively protecting the sub from my dog (or an unexpected car collision in my living room). The automatic on-off as a signal is detected is ideal. If you've got the physical space, got the money, and are willing to make all the effort to properly tune it then I recommend it. I've now tried SVS Sub, SVS feet, and SVS Stereo speakers. This company has good products, very good customer service, and excellent marketing. As a side note, I also bought the SVS Ultra speakers to mate to the Ultra Sub (from a retailer not direct from website). Those were also a good quality build and beautiful cosmetically, so I wanted to love them. However the tower speakers were not the sound I personally was looking for. Sound was super clean, but in my room, with my amp, they happened to be too bright and fatiguing for my ears. Not that they were bad in any way, just not right for me and my environment. I think most people would be pleased with them as home theatre speakers or if they like somewhat forward stereo speakers. I was thankful to be able to return. SVS proclaims the SVS Tower speakers to stand with some of the best audiophile speakers out there. In my experience they were good for the money, but not the best. I ended up spending almost double to get the warmth of sound I wanted. So we are all unique, in my experience I'd say yes, buy an Ultra Sub, maybe Ultra speakers depending on your personal preferences in sound and your environment. In the end, a customer with high expectations is mostly happy with the products and impressed with their thoughful customer service.
