An Incomparable Bass Experience

An unrelenting passion for awesome bass performance and engineering perfection guided every aspect of the PB16-Ultra subwoofer’s design. Groundbreaking technology, rigorous design, and extreme testing in real world and laboratory environments allowed SVS to achieve unmatched low frequency extension and output capabilities, all while keeping it amazingly detailed and articulate.

Massive New 16" SVS Ultra Driver with Unprecedented 8" Edge Wound Voice Coil

When designing the biggest and most formidable driver ever used in an SVS subwoofer, it was of utmost importance to meet or exceed the same supreme standards of control and accuracy as every other subwoofer SVS manufactures. One huge advancement that allows the PB16-Ultra to handle the crushing force of a 16” driver is the 8” edge wound voice coil, the largest ever deployed in a consumer subwoofer. This innovation ensures ultra-low distortion and pinpoint control at the highest drive levels resulting in incredible output and low frequency extension. By nature, larger drivers are more difficult to control, but the unprecedented voice coil design ensures accuracy in frequency response and speed in transients without ever sounding boomy.

Pushing the driver are four massive, dedicated toroidal ferrite magnets that unleash a staggering 95mm peak to peak Xmech excursion (82mm Xmax) and the highest levels of motor force and palpable SPLs. The light and rigid 16” Ultra driver cone consists of a premium fiberglass resin composite with optimal stiffness to mass ratio to maximize movement of air and sonic energy without ever distorting or losing control.

Stunningly Powerful, New Sledge Amplifier with Fully Discrete MOSFET Output

Conservatively rated at 1,500 watts continuous, 5,000+ watts peak power, the PB16-Ultra Sledge STA-1500D amplifier’s 64 Amp 200-Volt MOSFETs are the sonic muscle behind arguably the most powerful and highest fidelity subwoofer amplifier ever developed. Discrete MOSFET output unbridles the nearly limitless power in the Sledge amplifier and pushes the 16” driver to extreme levels of performance. They also represent an upgrade over the less robust integrated circuit output stages found in nearly all other Class D subwoofer amplifiers.

Effortless power must be harnessed to ensure refined behavior and pristine output at the most demanding drive levels. To achieve this, the PB16-Ultra subwoofer uses the audio industry’s most advanced 50 MHz Analog Devices Audio DSP with 56bit filtering to handle the nearly limitless power, only unleashing the perfect amount of low frequency energy at just the right time.

Innovative New Smartphone App for Subwoofer DSP and Control

Compatible with Apple and Android platforms, the innovative PB16-Ultra smartphone app unleashes the full depth, force, and nuance of the world’s finest subwoofer. The groundbreaking SVS subwoofer app controls all DSP functions and conveniently stores custom presets. It’s the easiest way ever to fine tune bass surpassing 16Hz at reference volumes from the comfort of your favorite seat.

For added convenience, 2-way feedback shows updates in real time on both the app and subwoofer interface, and Bluetooth connectivity allows adjustments to be made even when the subwoofer is not in sight. Control is also available via IR remote and an intuitive front panel display.

Acoustically Inert, Rigidly Braced Cabinet

A subwoofer capable of creating such extreme levels of sonic energy requires a formidable cabinet design. The PB16-Ultra is built with a double-thick MDF front baffle and rigid internal bracing to support the massive drive unit and to ensure an acoustically inert environment. The highly reinforced internal design eliminates any chance of coloration or resonance from the cabinet, even when the deepest low frequencies are played at reference sound pressure levels.

Absolute effortless bass
After almost killing myself and my brother in law getting two PB 16 ultras up a flight of steps, the results are unreal. I only have one hooked up now due to needing a quality splitter. With only one running, the bass is massive and clean. I have two PB 13 ultras and they are fantastic, but the difference between the 16's is huge. You can feel the room pressurize when the 16's move all that air. I'll have both 16's up and running today with my 13's. My original plan was to use the trade in plan to replace my 13's, but I had thrown away the original packaging which would cost around 300 bucks plus shipping to replace. Given I love the 13's, I just decided to bite the bullet and buy the 16's. I couldn't be happier.

PB16-Ultra: First off, I have zero affiliation with SVS other than loving their products and Customer Service which truly is second to none. Now on to the review: I have a pretty serious array of audio equipment from studio pieces, to home theater, to a full on professional night club setup that includes an 18" active sub the size of a small couch. I even have a SB13 on another setup (I have issues). When my new PB16 was delivered, I had to schedule a window of delivery time with FedEx which went very smoothly. The shipping weight is slightly over 200lbs so your mailman won't be delivering this one. I received my sub in the SVS packaging on a wood pallet and unfortunately I did not have any friends or neighbors around to help me set it up. I was going to wait, but the box kept staring at me. I was able to maneuver it from my garage, up a 5 step set of stairs, and into my living room all on my own by pushing and pulling the box along the way. I highly recommend getting someone to help you though. It would make the process much easier. The packaging is well thought out and once in place you can pretty much handle it on your own but a second person would be a big help. In summary, you can set this up on your own with some work but you should plan on having a friend around when you get your delivery notice. Oh, and save the box! If you ever move, it will make life much easier. I was able to fold the large box down to a flat plane with some thought. I placed the remaining packaging in some leaf lawn bags and put everything in my attic. When I got my previous PB13, I ordered the SoundPath Subwoofer Isolation System which basically replaces the stock legs the sub sits on. I didn't think of this when I ordered my PB16 but now that everything is setup, I find no need for the replacement legs. The stock legs are more than adequate. This sub is in a class of its own. I work in construction and I am considering getting a few more of these to loosen the drywall nails before we demo. Well, maybe that's a stretch but know that this sub is not for the faint of heart, nor is it for those of us with spouses that can't handle the walls shaking (pretty severely) when we watch a movie. This sub throws out frequencies that make it seem like there is a supernatural presence in your house. You will know pretty quickly what needs to be tightened or dampened. The sound this thing throws out is more "feeling" than audio. Its hard to describe really. It sort of changes the pressure in the room to meet the needs of the audio track you are playing and puts you inside the sound. The low frequencies make it feel like there is static electricity in the air, in good way. I tested it out with Mad Max: Fury Road. During some of the explosion scenes I thought I damaged my glass patio doors. The explosions were INSANE. My kids came running downstairs to see what was going on and my wife gave me that look of "that thing is going in your man cave". I really like the front display on this sub (previous SVS subs have the display in the back). I also like the convenience of the remote control it come with. I will need to use it wisely during movies so my wife doesn't freak. At this point, I have not installed the app but I plan to do so this evening so I can fine tune things, if necessary. It already sounds; I say sounds but it is really more than that (see above), amazing with the default settings. I can't wait to get the phone app running to further attempt to have pictures fall off my walls which is definitely going to happen. This thing crosses the barrier from a piece of audio equipment to some sort of industrial machine. SVS just created a new type of audio component. I am not sure I would even call it a sub. "Room Pressurizer" perhaps? I can't imagine what two of these would be like. Knowing me, I will soon find out but I might have to start looking for somewhere else to live...

Objective Value Proposition
Audio equipment can be difficult to review because one can pay $500-$2000 or more for very subtle, maybe unnoticeable, sonic differences in DACs, amps, etc., but with a subwoofer, the criteria is a little more apparent. I had the pb13-ultra and was within days of the year upgrade program so I decide to pull the trigger knowing that the cost would be the price difference along with the costly shipping and the hassle of packaging and moving subs but decided to do so based on a few criteria and in this order: 1) The output on this sub is at least perceptibly 6db, so a 6db upgrade is basically having two pb13ultras--if i am not mistaken--although I perceive the output to be larger than that, especially on the very low octaves; 2) I have a relatively small theater room of around 2500 square feet which is highly acoustically treated and designed to perform well, so even though I may not use more output overall I believe the headroom provides tighter, more accurate sound, and like i said, better performance at the deep frequencies; 3) sure, the app is cool and so is the front panel control but i set it up, and never use it but on the rare occasion I want to give a newcomer the experience of deep frequencies and high output, so I like some of the features but I can do without.

Ultimately, the steps up in svs subwoofers models don't suffer from the law of diminishing returns in which I get more but slightly more relative to the money, but for $500 extra (over the pb13ultra) I essentially get 2 or 2.5 pb13-ultras. I know that this flagship is a value proposition based upon it committing to the law of increasing returns. Want the most value you can afford? Then buy or upgrade to what you wallet can afford and you are always getting the higher payoff. Thanks SVS!

I have heard many subwoofers in my time. I love sound and I love bass. However, I prefer accurate bass. I want the room to shake when an explosion happens, but I also want music to sound accurate. I have heard 18 inch subwoofers that cost upwards of $10,000. This subwoofer is so powerful, so precise, so delicate, so monstrous that it went beyond my high expectations and beyond anything I have heard! As soon as the box arrived, my wife said that we couldn't possibly keep it because of its size. The 45 day trial is what convinced her that we should even try out this beautiful subwoofer, because she said it was just too big. We have a tough floor plan of over 1,000 square feet of hallway, kitchen, dining, living and high ceilings. I had a subwoofer behind the couch, because that was the only way bass could be felt from the chairs because of the amount of space in the room that needed to be filled. The bass was never quite accurate enough and I was hoping the pb-16 ultra might solve my bass issues. After the initial av calibration, I only made a slight adjustment on the av receiver according to SVS's amazing recommendations, and put in an Atmos blu-ray. We started watching the opening scenes from Deadpool and as soon as the car crashes were finished my wife took a deep breath and looked over at me with a smile on her face and said, "well you're not returning that, that was better than any theater I have ever been to! I loved feeling the sound throughout the room!" I couldn't agree more. The accuracy and sheer power of the PB16 is something you have to experience to believe. The sound pressure fills our entire downstairs. When it's called for, you can feel an explosion throughout your entire body. When the PB-16 is in action, it makes me believe I have 4 subwoofers, one on each corner of the room, yes it is truly that outstanding. What really blows my mind is that something so powerful can be so accurate and blend so smoothly with the other speakers. When I did a massive amount of research on the AV forums, the name that kept coming up was SVS and I'm so happy and proud to own such a beautiful instrument.

For me they sound better with the av receiver crossover at 80hz and adjust the Low pass Filter and volume thats it. no more settings needs to be done. Please buy them or one if you can two is better. All i can describe it is like for movies the monster in the movie feels like its in your house, and for music you will the music in your body. Im lucky I own two of them. :-)

pb16 Ultra
Having owned several svs products I pre ordered a pb16 the day they were announced sometime in October, and received my first in December. I planned on replacing my pb13 Ultra if I noticed a significant improvement. The moment I hooked it up, and before running any eq on the sub I noticed a superior tone to the sub as much as I liked my pb13 the tone on the pb16 was superior to my ears. In only improved once calibrated through my AVR. It plays the deepest movie soundtracks effortlessly, but what surprised me is how well it does with music, so well that I don't even change the port tune from extended. The bass is deep and clean, but not bloated. The sub was effortless to intigrate with my system. After a short time I utilized Svs's upgrade program and returned my Pb13 for a second pb16. Duals added a seat to seat balance in the bass as well as an increase in output. The finish on both subs is impeccable, and the app is convenient and very user friendly. These subs sound as good as they look, and dealing with SVS is a breeze. Your choice of finish on the pb16 Ultra is included in the price, so is shipping. Need help setting them up? It's a phone call, text, or email away. If you're not completely satisfied with it within the generous 45 day trial period, return it. You pay no shipping and you're charges are full refunded. How can a company afford to to this, well the subs sound and look so good, and play so effortlessly low I expect returns are at a minimal. The price of entry is not cheap, but the quality, looks, and incredible output make them worth every penny in my opinion. $2500 gets you an amazing sub, backed by an amazing company that always puts its customer first.

The King of Subwoofers, Period.
I have had a dedicated theater space since 2000 and over time have tried various subwoofers. My last subwoofer was a Velodyne DD-15 which was the pinnacle of the big woofers when it was made. I was a bit skeptical about SVS being able to compete - but it was going to be a Velodyne DD-18+ or the SVS PB-16 Ultra. With so many rave reviews and a money back guarantee I bought the SVS. Please note that SVS answers their phone and is very responsive - Velodyne didn't even have a phone number to call. About a week later a semi pulls up and the subwoofer came into the house. This has a slightly nicer finish than what my Velodyne had - so far so good. The first movie was Transformers with Atmos. I literally thought Optimus Prime was in the room with me - this speaker recreates bass so deep with so little effort that you literally can't believe it. There is absolutely no comparison between my Velodyne DD-15 and the SVS PB-16. I took some time and listened to music - and the speaker reacts precisely and quickly. While it doesn't have a microphone to precisely set up the subwoofer it managed just fine without it. For someone reading, is it too much bass I have an easy answer, just turn it down a couple of decibels using the app - which is very fast and user friendly. You will never say, I wish I had more bass - this subwoofer delivers. I can't believe they can sell this for $2500. Nope, can't believe it. It dominates subwoofers that cost $6k....for less than 1/2 the price. If you are looking for the best looking subwoofer, with the best sound, easy to use and a company that stands behind it that you can talk to, this is the Subwoofer for you. If you buy anything else, you made a mistake.

Adding the Ultra PB16 to my highend home theater system transformed a great sounding system to a system that rivals IMAX. When listening to music the sub is displays a very musical well defined sound. This sub does it all.
While the cost is not inexpensive, the build quality, features, and amazing sound output, makes this sub a bargain. At its price-point, the Ultra PB16 has no rivals.
