Focal Elegia Headphones Overview

Though Focal’s first three high-resolution headphones – Elear, Utopia and Clear – are still getting rave reviews, each is still offered as an open-back design only. But now, thanks to a breakthrough years in the making – a way to integrate premium speaker drivers into a closed back design without making any concessions on lower frequencies – Focal closes the circle with the company’s latest. With Elegia, audiophiles, musicians and engineers who depend on (and prefer) closed-back headphones can have them, sans the frequency loss so often typical in closed-back designs.

Product Information

Elegia is an audiophile circumaural closed-back pair of headphones from Focal. The ergonomic design makes them incredibly comfortable and offers excellent sound isolation, making these headphones the ideal solution for long listening sessions. Continuing its headphone development programme, the Focal R&D team has introduced several new innovations, all with incredible audio performance in mind. The full-range 'M'-shape aluminium/magnesium dome speaker driver provides a very high frequency response, which is the basis for Elegia’s supremely dynamic sound. In addition, the frameless voice coil, which is lightweight yet incredibly stiff, reproduces the minutest details that adds to the convincing all-round performance. With its incredible tonal balance combined with long-term comfort, the Elegia is a key reference in the high-end closed-back headphones sector.

Fantastic Headphones
These are excellent headphones, Build quality is excellent, feels very premium, and very comfortable. In terms of the sound quality, sounds decently open for a closed back headphone. Clarity is exceptional, vocals sound really smooth and real, on par with HD600 vocals, but the vocals on these sound a little further back, some tracks more than others, but very balanced headphones while the senn's are not as balanced in my opinion. Only negative thing I would say about the sound is the bass could use a little more punch, on some songs the bass is perfect, others could use a little more energy, but the bass overall sounds accurate and refined.

These are my first Focal headphones and I am impressed indeed, in terms of value, there are definitely worth the price I paid, the original price for these were $800, for that price range I would prefer the T5P
s, but that's just my preference, these definitely compete in terms of clarity, imaging and soundstage, but like I said the bass is little light, still very accurate and good, but some may find these a little too light on the lower frequencies.

And two things to note when buying these, they do need some hours of burning in and warming up before they sound they're best, I know many people don't believe in burn in, but they will sound more open, and image better, people think of burning in headphones in the wrong way, just know that for any headphone no amount of burn in will change the personality of the headphone, just enhance it's features. If a pair if headphones is V shaped, no amount of burning in will change that.

Secondly these are sensitive to the source you play them with, for example, running them on a Dacmagic 200, and to my ears they sound better with the 200 connected to my Windows PC than with my Mac. And these do scale with better sources, they love high end gear.

Great sound, less great fit
They sound great and the sound isolation is perfect. The aren't super comfortable though. The ear ups hinge in a way that presses on the underside of the ear. But they're one of the few that doesn't cost a fortune, sound good, and fit a large head so they're staying.

Not what I expected
Having only owned Bose and Sony speakers in the 300 range I assumed headphones all sounded a certain way. These headphones have less bass and the vocals are crystal clear compared to traditional headphones. It sounds like i am at a concert. when i switch back to other headphones they sound so muted because my ear adapts. need to use it for some time to break them in and they sound amazing.

First off fit and build on these are first rate. Head band and ear cups are very comfortable. I'm driving my Elegia's via a Graham Slee Bitzie DAC and it is a match made in heaven. Using Tidal as a reference for streaming material, something like Massive Attack's Teardrop is beautifully detailed and controlled but a definite step up on my previous headphones (high end Bluetooth AKG), side by side listening and comparison is jaw dropping. The way the sound stage opens up at around the 3 minute mark on Deep Purples 'Child in Time' 1995 is pure Wow moment. Very happy customer.

Fantastic 1st impresión, only 1 day in! Level of clarity/detail and bass accuracy is excellent. Soundstage and airiness, unbelievable for a closed-back headphone, highly recommend!

First impressions - before fully running in - are that these are fantastic headphones. If these improve further over the next few days then I will be even more delighted. I had not imagined a closed back headphone could sound SO open. Bravo on the sound. I have the newer (rubber finish) cable and this is better than I had expected but still a bit stiff. Clamping force is fairly high too but that's always going to vary with head shape and size.

Great build quality. Sound is precise, but treble tuning is slightly harsh. Benefits from EQ adjustment.

Do these headphones have Bluetooth capability?
Nick M on Jul 18, 2019
  No, they are wired only.
Can these be used/powered with/by a cell phone?
A shopper on Aug 11, 2023
Thanks for your inquiry. The Elegia can be driven by a cell phone. Note, however, depending upon your preference, a cell phone may not provide adequate power to drive headphones at a higher volume. A solution may be the addition of a headphone amplifier or connection to an amplifiers headphone jack.
What is the likelihood of Replacement parts such as Cushions in the future?
A shopper on Aug 10, 2023
Thanks for your inquiry. Manufacturers tend to keep accessories like ear cushions available for 3 to 5 years, but that can vary by manufacturer, but it is the case with Focal. If you thoroughly enjoy the Eligia it wouldnt be a bad idea to contact Focal soon and order replacement to insure against future lack of availability.
