Vs. the NAD: the Cambridge has more soul, more dynamics, better everything. The NAD is very detailed, but that's it. Compared to the AXA35, the NAD is lifeless.
vs. the AXA85: I tried out the 85 as well because it has a subwoofer output and other features. Sadly, it seems that there is some sound compromise being made to offer more power and better features for only $50 more. The mid- to low-range frequencies seem oddly suppressed through the 85. The highs are crisp--almost too much so on my system. I didn't notice any advantage in power. I'm keeping the 35 and using high-level lines to feed my sub.
"Tested" with: Q Acoustics 3020 speakers, music source = RPi 4 HATed with Allo BOSS DAC.

Mine is paired with Q Acoustics 3020's and a Dragonfly Black DAC. This speaker-amp pairing is a match made in heaven. Subwoofer is possible if you have high level inputs to the sub, and even easier if it has high level outputs for pass-through. I've done with a Monoprice, but honestly, the Cambridge makes the low end sing so nicely on my bookshelf speakers, I don't really feel a huge need for the sub.
I've also auditioned the NAD D3020, and it sounds soulless and flat compared to this Cambridge. I gladly gave up the extra features--none of that stuff will give you goosebumps like an amazing sound will. Finally, I compared to an old Sony 100 WPC receiver, and as you would expect, the Cambridge is a big quantum leap up, by any measure.
Side note: what hifi .com recommends staying under $500 for your speaker pairing. I suspect they're probably right: if you have a $1k pair of KEFs or something, then you should step up the amp, too.
