Product Information

The Widest Sound of Any Smart Speaker

The Bose Home Speaker 500 fills any room with powerful sound. Inside the speaker, two custom drivers point in opposite directions to bounce sound off the walls, creating a soundstage wider than any other smart speaker.

You get voice control from Alexa built in, which puts millions of songs, Internet Radio, playlists, and more at the tip of your tongue. And when the music’s playing loud, the Bose Home Speaker 500 will still hear you. Just under the top is a custom-designed eight-microphone array for superior voice pickup. But control doesn’t stop at just voice — tap the top controls to play, pause, or skip tracks, or manage it all from the Bose Music app.

When it comes to what you want to hear, there are plenty of options, too. Access integrated music services like Spotify and Amazon Music at the touch of a button. You can set up to six different presets for playlists, Internet Radio stations, and more. Or, connect over Bluetooth to play anything from your phone or tablet. And with Alexa, music is just the beginning. You have access to things like weather reports and news headlines. If you want to hear something, just ask. Plus, future software updates will add new features — like Apple AirPlay 2.

It looks as good as it sounds, with a seamless anodized aluminum body that gives the speaker a refined finish. The Bose Home Speaker 500 is part of a new Bose family of smart speakers and soundbars designed to grow with you, so you can enjoy more music in more rooms.

Bose Simple Sync

Hear your movies and music better

Bose SimpleSync is a new technology that allows you to pair a member of the Bose Home Speaker family with select Bose portable Bluetooth® speakers or Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700. It’s really simple to use and it really comes in handy. Here’s how.

When binge-time and bedtime collide

Let’s say you and your significant other are obsessed with streaming the latest supernatural horror series and you’re halfway through a new episode. She’s falling asleep but she gives you permission to finish it on your own. How can you keep watching without keeping her awake? If you have a Bose Soundbar 500 or 700 hooked up to your TV, you can use SimpleSync to pair it with your Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700. With separate volume levels, you can lower or mute your soundbar while your headphones stay loud and clear. Then you can finish the episode without disturbing her — and without spoiling the plot twists, either.

When it’s family movie time with the extended family

Bose SimpleSync is useful for the opposite reason, too — when there’s one person in the room who needs to hear the TV louder than everyone else, rather than quieter. For example, let’s say you have the grandparents over to watch the latest toys-come-to-life movie with their grandkids. Now, kids usually don’t mind turning up the TV really loud, but even they run for cover when Grandpa gets a hold of the remote. Luckily, loaning him your Bose Headphones 700 that you’ve used SimpleSync to pair with your Bose Soundbar 700 lets him hear things loud and clear while the rest of you can enjoy the movie without having to break out the earplugs.

When your dinner party morphs into an actual party

Let’s say you’re hosting a small party with friends, but then your friends’ friends arrive and it’s starting to feel kind of crowded. It would be really great if some of the people would move into the other room, but the music’s playing in this room, so how can you blame them? If you’re using a member of the Bose Home Speaker family and you’ve also got a Bose portable Bluetooth speaker, you can use SimpleSync to pair them and play the same song at the same time. Then you and your guests can spread out a little and keep the good times — and tunes — rolling. SimpleSync technology has a typical Bluetooth wireless range of 30 feet to stay connected.

The app that makes it all happen

The free Bose Music app does a lot of things, including help you set up SimpleSync. In just a few taps, you’ll be getting more out of your Bose speakers and headphones than ever before. To get started, make sure your compatible products are turned on and in pairing mode, and then open the app on your mobile device.

Great sound, poor set-up
The speaker sounds great, but the set up is needlessly confusing and frustrating.

Fine Sound - Wonky App - Caveat Emptor
ose is the master of psychoacoustics, and has been for many decades. I purchased the 500 to operate connected to two three Home Speaker 300s, two of them brand new and one rebuilt by Bose. The Smart Speaker 500 produces fine detail and clean sound with crisp, tight bass. It never gets to an ear-splitting level, and the bass output will not rumble the walls and floors, but is plenty loud enough for entertaining. It is high quality sound that is a pleasure to listen to, especially with good recordings. The pleasure ends there, however. Any consumer product should be easy to use and reliable, without exceptional troubleshooting efforts. It appears as though the Bose music app is an underdeveloped, unstable disaster. I got the feeling that I was beta-testing the app for Bose at the cost of the speakers that I purchased. Bose should be paying me for my field testing efforts! I placed the 500 and 300s around the house to provide room-to-room sound. It was great while it lasted, that is when they occasionally worked as a group. Most of the time they would not connect, and when all of them did, the connection would not last. Once underway with a four speaker group, the app displayed the error message “connection to the product has been lost”, usually within 30 minutes or so. I could not disconnect any of the paired speakers at that point, and there was no control of the master volume or that of the individual speakers. Bluetooth is apparently used to communicate with and control the primary connection speaker in a group, so I placed my iPhone as the control source within 10 to 15 feet of it at all times, to ensure that it was not out of range. Some speakers could become "Not Available" at any time. At start up, this meant that I was simply not going to be able to use them. This was the case for the two new 300s every time I attempted to boot them up for use. During group play the “Not Available” message meant that all speakers were out of control. I “could not adjust the volume or remove them from the group. “Something went wrong. C3" was also a frequent one-size-fits-all error message that would pop up at any time. After 4 or 5 days of 3 to 4 hours each day trying to debug these problems through product restarts, firmware updates, reloading the app numerous times on my iPhone, etc. I am throwing in the towel and returning them. I have a long time career as an engineer and still found all of this frustrating and disappointing. I can only imagine the infuriation of a consumer without technical know-how trying to make these things work as advertised. I get the impression that Bose is desperately trying to play catch up with its competitors, one of whom has been in the wifi speaker business for 20 or more years, and they rushed the Smart and Home speakers to market without completing app software development to get a foot in the door. I haven’t experienced software this wonky since the days before the advent of the Microsoft Windows 7 OS. Once I regain my confidence, and some of my funds for toy expenditures, I may try other manufacturers' products as an alternative. That is, if this experience didn’t drive me back to a hard-wired two channel audiophile stereo system. From the days of the 901 and the Wave Radio to this. Hey Bose, what happened?

If you buy 2 of these speakers can they pair in stereo mode?
A shopper on Mar 22, 2021
Thanks for your inquiry. Each Home Speaker 500 reproduces both left and right channels for a wide stereo soundstage. A second 500 can be added and used as a pair for an even wider room filling sound stage.
