Rega Planar 6 Turntable with Ania MC Cartridge Overview
Turns out those Brits can do more than throw great weddings. They also build some amazing audio equipment. Take Rega’s stellar line of turntables and accessories, now available at World Wide Stereo. Rega’s legendary dedication to analog and vinyl reproduction shines through in every model they’ve made since the early ‘70s. Today’s exemplary Planar 6 is handcrafted (in their Essex, England, facility) of the most modern materials to eliminate resonance and vibration, engineered to effortlessly track every groove, factory-fitted with a moving-coil cartridge of Rega’s own design, and driven with precision by a low-noise synchronous motor hooked to a separate spot-on and adjustable power supply. No wonder in its review, What Hi-Fi awarded the P6 a full five-star rating for its “balanced, mature presentation,” with a “frankly astonishing refined and mature sound.” The Planar 6 with Ania MC Cartridge reaffirms Rega’s regal status among record-playing royalty.

Impeccably stiff, from upper lip…
Rega has been perfecting tonearm design for nearly 40 years, with two broad engineering goals – frictionless movement both horizontally and vertically, with no measurable free play in the arm. The P6 turntable’s RB330 arm approaches both ideals with a precision bearing assembly hand-matched to a tubular aluminum tonearm of low and distributed mass, custom-fitted with stainless steel counterweight. The whole mechanism is braced not once, but twice, to the turntable assembly, for maximum rigidity and stability.
…Right down to the bum
Those who expect turntables to carry a certain amount of heft might be surprised to lift a Rega. The whole package is under 13 lbs. That doesn’t mean the P6 is susceptible to vibration and resonance, however. The plinth (a fancy name for the base) combines lightness and stability. Rega surrounds a core of Tancast 8, a polyurethane foam designed for the aerospace industry, with a high-pressure Polaris laminate, for a package that’s strong, quiet and sturdy – and attractive enough (with sleek gray matte finish and gloss black trim) to fit with any modern décor.
Served up on a silver platter
An upgraded-quality drive belt spins the solid aluminum sub-platter, topped by a dual layer smoked/clear glass platter that acts as a flywheel to smooth out the small speed variations known as “wow.” Both spin around a patent-pending, ultra-low friction central spindle hub. On the other end of that belt is a newly designed 24-volt low-noise synchronous motor. And that motor is powered by an individually matched power supply in its own case, which generates a locked-in frequency unaffected by line voltage variations. That AC unit houses both the power and speed controls, as well as a fine-speed adjustment to compensate as components age.
Coils with a moving presentation
Think of moving-coil cartridges as the “tubes” of turntables. Like tube amps, moving-coil cartridges have a characteristic sound treasured by audiophiles – a natural warmth and clarity that defines each instrument on the sound stage. Rega’s Ania cartridge uses hand-wound coils and a powerful neodymium magnet, all housed in a clear, rigid plastic casing. And it comes fitted at the factory for ease of installation and setup.
Pairs perfectly with…
Moving coil cartridges are naturally low output. Unless your amp or receiver has inputs for MC phono, you’ll probably need a pre-preamp – which Rega conveniently offers in its matching Fono MC Phono Stage – to connect to a sound system of sufficient quality. With that, the Planar 6 pairs perfectly with a wide variety of top-notch amps and speakers – let your ears be your guide, and shop confidently with World Wide’s 60-day satisfaction guarantee. Oh, and scones – Rega auditioning goes great with scones and a spot of tea.
