Winner - The Best Floorstanding Speakers of 2023

KLH Kendall 3-Way Floorstanding Speaker Overview

One of the most hallowed nameplates in the history of home audio, KLH is back with a full line of new-design speakers – and a rededication to the company’s original mission to deliver an affordable audiophile experience to all. The Kendall 3-way tower speaker, the flagship of the new line, embodies that goal. The Kendall features custom designed drivers of durable and sonically superior Kevlar and anodized aluminum, with oversized magnets, braided tinsel leads and high-quality crossover circuitry to ensure smooth transitions among the speakers. Solid, rigid MDF internal driver chambers are braced for ultra-low resonance. The whole package is finished in real wood veneers – black oak and American walnut – and brushed-aluminum speaker faceplates that look equally elegant with or without the seamless magnetic grille attached. The new KLH is so confident, the company offers an unheard-of 10 year warranty. But just as in the original KLH, it’s all about the sound, and the Kendall transports you convincingly to concert hall or cinema at a fraction of the cost of most high-end speakers. World Wide Stereo is proud to be an inaugural dealer for the new KLH speaker line.

From the heartland, from the heart

The new KLH, located in the USA’s heartland – Noblesville, Indiana – pays homage to the brand by building incredible value into every speaker. The Kendall starts with superior materials – woven Kevlar cones with die-cast aluminum baskets, anodized aluminum domes, brushed aluminum faceplates, MDF cabinetry with real wood veneers, nickel-plated binding posts, top-quality crossover components – and adds in decades of engineering and design experience, to deliver a speaker that looks as good as it sounds, and sounds better than far more expensive competitors.

Tough, solid drivers…

Each Kendall tower begins with a pair of 6-1/2-inch Kevlar woofers, for strength and stiffness, suspended via flexible, durable butyl rubber in powder-coated, die-cast aluminum baskets with oversized magnets. A 5-1/4 inch midrange driver is similarly rugged. And the 1-inch dome tweeter is formed of anodized aluminum for crystal clarity, linear response and maximum dispersion.

…Working in perfect harmony

The individual drivers are controlled by custom crossover circuitry, built with the highest-grade components, and tied together with braided tinsel wiring, all for minimal interference among the drivers, and for maximum extension. Together, they reach deep down to 25Hz, and up beyond hearing to 23kHz, with flat frequency response (+/- 3dB) and wide soundstage.

Tuned to the room

The Kendall includes a rear bass port that can be tuned to reduce the airflow and optimize the bass response when the speakers are placed adjacent to the walls.

Got extra channels?

The nickel-plated binding posts handle your choice of speaker wire connections (banana plugs, spade lugs, posts, bare wire). And if your amp or surround receiver has a couple channels to spare, consider bi-amping the Kendalls (connections supplied to separately power the lows and highs) for ultra-clean sonic reproduction. A sturdy MDF plinth and a variety of mounting feet are included, from rubber (for bare floor) to spikes (carpeting), for optimum decoupling from the room surface.

Looks great covered or uncovered

The cabinet is finished in genuine wood veneers (your choice of black oak or walnut). And the magnetic clasps for the grille cover are hidden, so if you like your speaker systems naked, the fully finished front panel with brushed aluminum speaker faceplates will happily oblige any exhibitionist tendencies.

Pairs perfectly with…

Build your whole home theater with KLH: Add the Story Center Channel Speaker, and a pair or more of the Beacon Surrounds, and enjoy the show. In fact, the entire KLH line shares a sonic signature, so you can confidently mix and match a system that suits your needs. And you always can count on World Wide Stereo’s 60-day guarantee.

A brief history of sound

Back in the 1950s and early ‘60s, a band of pioneering engineers revolutionized the audio world and led the golden age of high fidelity. Among them, possibly the most revered and warmly remembered is Henry Kloss, the K of KLH. An inveterate tinkerer and serial entrepreneur, he started some of the most influential companies of the era and beyond, from AR and Advent to Cambridge Soundworks and Tivoli Audio. Kloss is credited with introducing influential innovations including acoustic suspension speakers, Dolby recorders and projection TVs. To honor his memory and dedication to the highest fidelity from huge electrostatic speakers to tiny table radios, the revamped KLH has named its new speaker line for streets on and around Kloss’ beloved Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus in Cambridge, Mass.

Best speakers in 40 years
Purchased these because of the recommendation of Ira, World Wide Stereo advisor. Well, Ira was right these are the best speakers I have heard in 40 plus years of purchasing speakers. I have owned Advents, Altecs, Boston Acoustics, ADS and Definitive Tech none can compare to sound quality of the KLH Kendall. Kendall has rich bass, clear clean highs and mids. I have them hooked up to 1977 Pioneer SX 1050 totally restored and these things sing. Build quality is excellent, can't say enough about these speakers at this price but buy them you will not be sorry. Special thanks to Ira for his musical knowledge.

What is the amp. max rating and can thay be biy wired?
A shopper on Apr 13, 2019
Thanks for your inquiry! Yes, these speakers can be bi-wired. According to the specification sheet, KLH suggests a maximum of 250 watts, but it can ably perform with power well beyond that. After all, under-powering speakers is a far greater concern than over-powering speakers. We recommend a minimum of 50 watts per channel, but for best performance look for 100 watts or more per channel. Thank you!
I'm new to tube amps and recently purchased an Icon Audio Stereo 25MKII 30wpc integrated amp and have been looking for some complementary speakers and considering the KLH Kendall primairily for their high sensitivity. Your thoughts on this being a good match ? Thanks
A shopper on Mar 17, 2022
Thanks for your inquiry. The high sensitivity (96dB) of the Kendall and its smooth, balanced frequency response makes it a very practical match for the modestly powered amplifier.
I am powering my Kendalls with a Marantz 7012 (biamp). Do I need a separate amplifier?
Meena D on Jun 11, 2020
Thanks for your question. The KLH Kendalls are very efficient (96dB). Assuming your Marantz SR7012 is configured correctly for bi-amping it should work OK. Note that nearly every brand of 7 or 9 channel AV receivers only measures power output with 2 channels driven. Driving 4 channels of stereo program to biamp the KLH will likely reduce the continuous power output with 4 channels driven to less than 90 watts RMS per channel. Using the remaining 5 channels for surround will reduce the RMS power a little more. You dont need a separate amplifier. The Marantz will biamp just fine. Using a separate amp to biamp will increase the dynamic range and play a little louder. A powered subwoofer will also reduce the load on the 4 channels driving the Kendalls.
Can you use a single connection speaker wire?
A shopper on Oct 22, 2019
Yes you can. Bi-Wiring is simply an option.
I have a Denon AVR 2300W receiver, will that drive these optimally?
NYBOB on May 21, 2019
The 2300 receiver will drive these speakers optimally.
