Simply place your record on the platter and press play and the automatic tonearm will place the needle on the record, so you can enjoy your music with hands-free convenience. As well, this automatic drive will return the needle after the record has finished, so you never have to worry about an endless loop of crackling that occurs when a record ends. For the ~$300 budget, all I want is - A reliable system (speed must remain constant), Belt driven (hey, I'm old school), Auto Play, User Upgradable Cartridge, Weighted tone arm, and Line out.
This is my first time to ever own an Audio Technica product and so far, all of my requirements has been met by this model.
Assembling the turntable is fun and easy, and the instructions are clear. It gets me excited like a kid as I go through putting on the platter, the belt, and balancing the tone arm as if this is a ritual before anything gets started!
Precautionary for first time users:
1. When plugging the power of the unit for the first time, the platter started spinning and the tone arm has started to move toward the rubber mat! Luckily I was able to catch it and hit the stop button to avoid damaging the needle. This behavior probably is caused by a Start Button being pressed either during the packing or unpacking of the product.
2. This is an ALWAYS-ON turntable. Meaning, even when completely stopped, a small bump that causes the tone arm to move towards the platter, that platter will start spinning and the needle would end-up in a rubber mat that could damage it. Best option to avoid this is to always set the lift lever up when not in use. This unit needs a power button.
3. The product comes with a fixed attached short RCA phono/line output cable. I have a tower type home theater system cabinet with the TT placed on top; be prepared for a female-to-male extension cable to reach the receiver. The manufacturer could have made it simpler by having a female RCA phono/line outlet for which most users may have the common male-to-male cables for use.
