Customer Reviews for Yamaha RX-V4 5.2-Channel AV Receiver with 8K HDMI and MusicCast
A solid choice that checks off a lot of boxes for a reasonable price.
This unit is very good for the price. It comes with 4 hdmi inputs (including eArc), Bluetooth capabilities, a built in preamp (80W), and automatic sound calibration. I got this to plug everything in our home entertainment system into and it works well. If you're looking for an all arounder then this might just be the ticket. Downsides: instructions are lacking. I saw this on other reviews and dismissed it, but would actually love some more specifics on how to fine tune this receiver. Sound: I'm coming from a Rotel receiver - so the Yamaha sounds good enough, but know that you're not going to get the sound quality of a Rotel, Macintosh, etc. The depth of sound and quality is good on the RX-V4a, but I noticed that the soundstage wasn't as big or have as much depth as a true hi-fi receiver. For reference, I the Yamaha powering my Bowers and Wilkins FPM 6's. Overall, this is a great choice for most people. If you have an exceptional set of speakers, I'd look at some of the receivers more dedicated to hi-fi sound.
I love it! The built-in audio scene selections are great. I also really love the ability to stream audio from a large selection of internet sources via the phone app. It also has an adequate number of HDMI inputs for my home theater needs.
What I wish I could do is more easily cast to it from my Google smart home system. While I can use my Google smart speakers for basic control of the unit (which works great), I cannot add it to my Google groups for casting audio. So, I have to choose between using Google speakers all throughout my house (which allows me to roam throughout my house) vs. listening via my Yamaha unit in only one room. This is my biggest frustration.
Home theater movie enjoyment and listening to great music is why I purchased this unit. I love the unit and how great it sounds with my incredible Golden Ear speakers. This is my third Yamaha receiver purchase. There are no bugs or problems to deal with.
This works really well in my setup. Fits in the same space as my old a/v receiver. Uses the same speakers and subwoofer. Updates my system to 4k. Much simpler interface and remote than my old Sony receiver. All that and on sale too. I am happy.
So this receiver and speaker set is overall great! The sound is crisp and clear, the sub produces great bass, it was easy to set up. However, the only instructions it comes with is how to put it all together. The instructions on how to manage settings and all the other components, you have to download. This is frustrating because as you are trying to learn the different settings and how to get the best sound for different things, you have to open a document on your phone or computer and try to do it instead of having something in front of you. It's a small thing that just bothers us but I'm sure for people that are more well-versed in surround sound systems it isn't an issue.
I bought this receiver for surround sound after my other one got fried by a lightning strike even though I had surge protectors. My old one had to have surround settings done manually. I liked how this one sets it automatically. Price was good also compared to others which were more expensive but had less features and connections.

I chose the Yamaha RX-V4A over the Denon AVR-S650H because of its' ability to use MusicCast speakers as wireless surrounds. The minor hardware upgrades in video processing (over the Denon) helped make my decision too.
