Sonic Boom

Engineered for sonic power, the R-N303 is equipped with a high-quality, high-power amp, featuring a single push-pull and discrete configuration that delivers a maximum output of 140 watts/channel (8Ω). Its low-impedance design minimizes the lengths of the audio signal paths, while placing the power supply unit near the amp unit eliminates energy loss and achieves superior drivability for optimum sound reproduction with all kinds of speakers, providing exceptionally dynamic, exciting sound.

Low-Noise Circuitry Design and High-Grade Parts

This receiver features circuitry design that prioritizes sound quality, drawing on the Yamaha Hi-Fi concept, and effectively lowering mutual interference by dividing the analog and digital sections into separate blocks. It utilizes carefully selected quality parts also used in high-end models, which have been thoroughly optimized for superior sound. The result is exceptionally low noise and superior S/N performance, for sound reproduction filled with a sense of spaciousness.

Built for High Resolution

The R-N303 is compatible with high-resolution sound sources: DSD 5.6 MHz native and AIFF, WAV, FLAC 192 kHz/24-bit, as well as Apple Lossless 96 kHz/24-bit. It uses a Burr-Brown 192 kHz/24-bit DAC to deliver superior S/N performance. Combined with the Yamaha original network module, the unit thoroughly draws out all the sonic merits of high-resolution sound sources, effectively reproducing even the subtle ambience of concert halls and delicate expressive nuances in the sound.

High-Quality Sound, In-House Designed Network Module

The key device that determines the sound quality of network audio is the Yamaha original network module, which contains a high-precision, low-jitter clock that improves the reproduction of high-resolution sound sources. Pure audio clock generation without an added jitter constituent caused by the clock generator sharply lowers the creation of jitter noise when playing network, USB, and Bluetooth sources, and achieves further S/N improvement. It faithfully distinguishes delicate differences in the sonic characteristics of high-resolution sound.

Enjoy All Music Sources

This network receiver lets you enjoy music from CD players and turntables, and it can play music you have stored on your computer or NAS (network-attached storage). Moreover, with just this single device, you can play music wirelessly from smartphones or tablets using Bluetooth or AirPlay, as well as a variety of music from streaming services and FM/AM radio.

MusicCast Expands Entertainment Possibilities

MusicCast uses your existing wireless network to deliver music and audio enjoyment. It can stream digital music content from your smartphone, PC, or NAS to other MusicCast devices in your home. It can also share the music from external devices such as a CD player or TV connected to the R-N303. Audio content from Bluetooth-connected smartphones or tablets can also be streamed to MusicCast devices in multiple rooms.

Digital Audio Input for TV or Blu-Ray Disc Player

This receiver is equipped for digital audio input with both optical and coaxial terminals. The optical is for receiving audio from a TV, and the coaxial for receiving audio from a Blu-ray Disc player. The audio stays in the digital domain, giving you pure, pristine dynamic sound for all your entertainment sources, from sports and other programs, to movies and concerts.

Fingertip Control

Tap, swipe, and control with the free MusicCast app. Download the intuitively designed app and seamlessly operate the R-N303 and other MusicCast devices.

Has what I needed in back connections. Simple. Don't need to run Carnegie Hall! Had Yamaha before and love it.

Initial thoughts
Opened the box attached speakers and spent a couple hours trying to connect to the internet before I figured it out. I even read the instructions. Problem is there are several ways to connect with the internet each one seemingly more complex with required data entry via the remote than the next. Even tried hard wire cat 5 directly to the router with no joy. Finally figured out my router has a WEP button and that connected up the receiver after the 3rd try. Then getting the receiver to connect with the phone was tricky but persistence paid off. Spent a few more hours figuring everything out and now enjoy the machine, day 1.

Yamaha R-N303; Pleasant surprise
I currently had an old NAD power amp and an old Luxman preamp connected to a pair of Altec Lansing Model 19 speakers. Prior to that I was using an old SAE 2400 power amp. It came to the point where I thought it best to consolidate my situation and rid the excess connections and heat generated. Along with moving into the current times and component design.

I looked at this unit and figured it would fit the application as I also required a phono input and I wanted a decent power amp. I wasn't swayed by the additional WiFi connectivity.

When I first got things connected up and running, my first thought was sending the unit back. The sound quality and power seemed lacking, and though I didn't want the WiFi connections, I still dug into it trying to make things work. The WiFi light just kept blinking.

I struggled with that to the point I just left it alone. I loaded batteries into the remote because I read it was needed to get into other areas of the receiver.

I moved through the options and I went into the volume trim where I bumped it up to 10. Things started to take shape as I checked the CD operation, tuner and phono section. I began to have second thoughts.

The next day, the WiFi light stayed on steady so I downloaded the MusicCast app onto my phone and tablet. I tried the Net Radio but it didn't offer me much it seemed. I then decided to set-up a Pandora account and things really became interesting. In fact, through it all, I discovered Pandora is a better option than I thought. I now even play it on my motorcycle using my phone and it works very well. Better than Sirius, which I cancelled a few months ago.

Anyway, after having this Yamaha receiver for about 5 days now, I am enjoying the sound and I really like the WiFi connectivity. I even played music from my laptop via WiFi.

The cabinet this is in stays nice and cool, which the old system always made very warm and required fans to help keep cool.

I say give this unit a chance.

Very Nice!
Very nice sound and features. I bought this for replacement of my 40 yr old Sherwood receiver. I needed something I could play my vinyl through and didn't want to break the bank, this receiver does the job effectively.

Very nice for a lower end priced receiver. Does what it's supposed to do. Bluetooth and Airplay connectivity is a nice feature for when I'm not playing vinyl.

I'm looking for an inexpensive receiver to power my Heresy's and connect to my NAS device . After speaking with WWS I'm sure this is my solution.
Dwight S on Sep 6, 2018
My old receiver died and I needed a new one to play my records. I didn't want to spend a lot of money and Yamaha has a pretty good reputation for audio equipment and this model is getting good reviews.

Is the 13 3/8' depth measurement including the knobs and speaker terminals or just the case of the receiver?
A shopper on Oct 22, 2018
The manufacturer's specifications state that the dimensions include legs and protrusions.
can powered speakers other than yamaha be used?
A shopper on Mar 28, 2020
Thanks for your question. The receiver requires conventional (wired) speakers for stereo left and right speakers. MusicCast is a wireless streaming system to reach MusicCast wireless speakers throughout your house. MusicCast works on your home wifi network and is only compatible with Yamaha MusicCast wireless powered speakers.
Can I hook up a tape deck?
A shopper on Feb 5, 2020
Thanks for the question. The R-N303 includes a line output and a line input so it is possible to hook up a tape deck. Please note that unlike traditional legacy- receivers that had a Tape Monitor loop, most receivers today do not have a tape monitor loop anymore.
is there a way to hook up a self powered sub?
A shopper on Dec 26, 2019
  Thanks for the question.
The short answer is maybe.
Some powered subwoofers have both line input (from sub output not included on the R-N303) and Speaker Inputs. I believe the only powered subwoofer we sell that includes speaker level inputs is the Sonance Impact i8.
The Yamaha R-N602 stereo receiver includes a subwoofer pre output.
Can you use a sub with this amp?
A shopper on Jul 20, 2018
The amp has no subwoofer output connection.
