An unrelenting passion for awesome bass performance and engineering perfection guided every aspect of the SB16-Ultra subwoofer’s design. Groundbreaking technology, rigorous design, and extreme testing in real world and laboratory environments allowed SVS to achieve massive output levels, extreme low frequency extension, near-perfect frequency response accuracy, and pinpoint transient response. The culmination of all SVS design advancements, SB16-Ultra represents the greatest leap forward in performance and innovation since the inception of subwoofers.
Massive New 16" SVS Ultra Driver with Unprecedented 8" Edge Wound Voice Coil
When designing the biggest and most formidable driver ever used in an SVS subwoofer, it was of utmost importance to meet or exceed the same supreme standards of control and accuracy as every other subwoofer SVS manufactures. One huge advancement that allows the SB16-Ultra to handle the crushing force of a 16” driver is the 8” edge wound voice coil, the largest ever deployed in a consumer subwoofer. This innovation ensures ultra-low distortion and pinpoint control at the highest drive levels resulting in incredible output and low frequency extension. By nature, larger drivers are more difficult to control, but the unprecedented voice coil design ensures accuracy in frequency response and speed in transients without ever sounding boomy.
Pushing the driver are four massive, dedicated toroidal ferrite magnets that unleash a staggering 78mm peak to peak Xmech excursion (65mm Xmax) and the highest levels of motor force and palpable SPLs. The light and rigid 16” Ultra driver cone consists of a premium fiberglass resin composite with optimal stiffness to mass ratio to maximize movement of air and sonic energy without ever distorting or losing control.
Stunningly Powerful, New Sledge Amplifier with Fully Discrete MOSFET Output
Conservatively rated at 1,500 watts continuous, 5,000+ watts peak power, the SB16-Ultra Sledge STA-1500D amplifier’s 64 Amp 200-Volt MOSFETs are the sonic muscle behind arguably the most powerful and highest fidelity subwoofer amplifier ever developed. Discrete MOSFET output unbridles the nearly limitless power in the Sledge amplifier and pushes the 16” driver to extreme levels of performance. They also represent an upgrade over the less robust integrated circuit output stages found in nearly all other Class D subwoofer amplifiers.
Effortless power must be harnessed to ensure refined behavior and pristine output at the most demanding drive levels. To achieve this, the SB16-Ultra subwoofer uses the audio industry’s most advanced 50 MHz Analog Devices Audio DSP with 56bit filtering to handle the nearly limitless power, only unleashing the perfect amount of low frequency energy at just the right time.
Innovative New Smartphone App for Subwoofer DSP and Control
Compatible with Apple and Android platforms, the innovative SB16-Ultra smartphone app unleashes the full depth, force and nuance of the world’s finest subwoofer. The groundbreaking SVS subwoofer app controls all DSP functions and conveniently stores custom presets. It’s the easiest way ever to fine tune bass surpassing 16Hz at reference volumes from the comfort of your favorite seat.
For added convenience, 2-way feedback shows updates in real time on both the app and subwoofer interface, and Bluetooth connectivity allows adjustments to be made even when the subwoofer is not in sight. Control is also available via IR remote and an intuitive front panel display.
Acoustically Inert, Rigidly Braced Cabinet
A subwoofer capable of creating such extreme levels of sonic energy requires an equally robust cabinet design. The SB16-Ultra is built with a double-thick MDF front baffle and rigid internal bracing to support the massive drive unit and to ensure an acoustically inert environment. The highly reinforced internal design eliminates any chance of coloration or resonance from the cabinet, even when the deepest low frequencies are played at reference sound pressure levels.

Wonderful subwoofer (tip: in large spaces, try both types of feet)
Our living room is where bass goes to die. It's part of an open floor plan entry/kitchen/living/two open loft bedrooms area totaling about 1,400 square feet with ceilings averaging above 9', with three openings to the other 1,300 sq ft of the house. It's too much cubic volume to pressurize with bass from one subwoofer.
Despite this challenge, the SB16-Ultra produces precise, rich, deep, satisfying bass from a listening position about 12' from the speakers and centrally placed sub (rolled off at 45 hz, 18 db/octave to supplement my near-full-range stereo speakers). We listen to a wide range of music including jazz, pop, classical, and hip hop, often at fairly high volumes, and the SB16 Ultra always delivers.
The only real surprise was finding out that the stock hard (nylon?) conical feet that came with the subwoofer worked MUCH better in our space than the optional $50 rubber feet. The sub has just the right degree of palpable impact with the stock feet. I put on the optional rubber feet, and the impact of the sub DISAPPEARED in our large listening space. It didn't matter how much I turned up the gain; my wife and I were sad. The stock feet went back on and all was well. So please don't assume that the optional rubber feet are best for a large space; the stock feet may be best. Happy listening!
I first purchased the sb 16. What an incredible sub. It was a bit more than i needed. The folks at SVS suggested the SB 3000. I tried it and it wasn’t enough for my requirements. SVS suggested the SB 4000 and omg it is perfect. The cool thing about these guys is you can call them and work through your needs. Very customer focused, best service I can remember. They helped me set up my sub and it sounds perfect.
The sub is good and I am comparing it to other high end subs including the paradigm Servo 15 V2. I have two and especially like the app and the ability to use one remote. I can ensure phase angle, roll off and slope are identical. It has brought out the texture in bass lines.
Matched this sub to my recently purchased PSB Stratus Gold i and used the recommended settings from SVS that matches it to these speakers. Flat out, made the sound huge! Crystal clear, match perfectly and has contributed to exceptional sound from my system.
The SVS SB16-Ultra Subwoofer is an amazing piece of Audio equipment, right off the box you see the quality and dedication that went on the production of this “BEAST” of a Subwoofer. The materials that are used on these Subs are of high quality, I know because I took a peak inside, from the rear of course, I took great care when removing the amplifier, I did used an old “credit card” in order not to damage it’s pristine and shiny look and to avoid any scratches to the finish, I couldn’t contain myself but I had to see the entrails of it for myself, the cabinet is well made, thicker than other Subs that I’ve owned before, the center reinforcement as well as the overall cabinet gives it’s sturdiness and rigidity. I was amazed the first time I heard this “BEAST” I’ve felt and love the authoritative sound and punch this Sub delivers, I was missing out much of my music and movie content with my previous Sub. SVS SB16-Ultra is the new “Boss,” and a game changer. My neighbors ears get tickled ?? every time I listen to music or watch heavy Sci-Fi action movies. Too bad for them, I enjoy every minute of it! ??????
By the way SVS, thanks for the extent of your customer care and for the $200.00 refund, due to a price reduction I was not aware of.
I took advantage of the trade-up program and moved from my SB3000 to the SB 16 Ultra. I'm totally happy with the Ultra - and Nancy with customer service made the whole experience surprisingly smooth. She was awesome from beginning to end. I really like and respect the way SVS does business.
Got my 4th PB16 delivered today, luckily my wife is bass head like myself. Awesome products SVS now I need additional coverage for my house with these house shaking furniture rattling monsters anything is possible ????????. Thanks for the speedy delivery and superb customer service, kudos to you guys ??????
Never cared to write a review; that's how good this one is!
No, I haven't been paid or even offered a discount for this review.
These people do their jobs out of love; money cannot buy the care, support, and dedication they have been showing over the years.
Now, when it comes to the sound, please, use the SVS interconnect cable, even if you believe it's snake oil. I have been building amps/speakers since 1978, and I can assure you, you'd have to pay 10x+ for anything marginally better. If you have only $10k in your system, this is your place to buy. For $300k+, you might want to spend more, but I'm not sure that all the line conditioners in a city will not take the dynamics out of your system in return for some relatively-stable sound image... You whole house, including the breakers would need to be re-wired and even at that point, nothing will be guaranteed.
The parameters of this sub are actually accurate. If you experience any lag or reverb, it's your amp.
Ultimately, it's up to you, but SVS also offers a 45-day unconditional return policy, which only bottom-feeders would take advantage of, but once you try these subs with the right interconnect cables on the right amp, you'll find this is a keeper. Placing it is another challenge, but in general, you want to make sure it's directed towards the longest end in your living room (or wherever your listening place is) in order to give the bass the longest way to run its course.
No 45 day trial necessary after a week and getting it dialed in this SB-16 Ultra is not being returned. Extraordinary how this one component can transform an entire system into a movie theater and live soundstage music performance. I thought my previous Klipsch R-115SW was good but this SB-16 is on a whole different level and quality of bass. My jaw drops like it never has before on movie scenes I’ve watched many times before and songs I’ve listened to numerous times. Even at sheer high volumes the SB-16 Ultra keeps asking for more with almost unlimited headroom. By far, the best purchase for my AV system.
So this isn't my first review and this is far from my first SVS purchase. I started with two pc2000s 6 years ago and ended up with two sb 16 ultras a few years later. Well life happened and I had to say goodbye to them. Started back on my journey 6 months ago and started with 2 pc2000 pros again. Traded up to pc4000 and traded up again to sb16 ultra. Very long story short, I ended back where I was a couple years ago and couldn't be happier. My experience with the SVS team has always been of the highest calibur; I mean it, I haven't had better customer service with any other company ever. I remain a loyal customer of svs for this reason and also top notch quality of what I can only describe as the deepest, cleanest bass I've ever heard. A winning two-punch combo.
I calibrate home theaters but don't often do so in those utilizing SVS subs. In my most recent job, there were 4 SVS SB16's installed - one in each corner - and a not very large room. I used REW to align the 4 subs and decided to see what (in this case) Audyssey could do with no help (e.g. PEQs in the subs or externally). Results: RULER FLAT response from about 115Hz down to (drum roll please) 11Hz. Room gain is our friend. And sonically, it was WAY better than I expected. Tight. No bass bloat. No "thumpiness". This theater was properly passively treated. We played some demo cuts from various movies at or above reference and the subs never made any nasty sounds. I have recently purchased and SVS SB-3000 to be used along side a higher end "soundbar". After the experience noted above, I can't wait to hear the results.
Unfortunately, I did some indecisive waffling with regard to this purchase. I started out buying the 2.1 prime wireless setup. Considering its specs and price point, it was pretty awesome. Shortly afterwards, my brother convinced me that I should get the 3000 micro subwoofer instead of the SB-1000 pro it came with. I pondered that for a bit, but, as he is the true audiophile in the family, I decided to follow his advice despite the added price tag. You will notice of course what this review is supposed to be about ??. After getting everything set up I decided that, while awesome, I wasn't quite satisfied yet. 2.1 with the micro sounded great....but I could do even better said my brain. Thanks to the very generous return policy and amazing customer service that SVS seems to have, I am currently enjoying my final rendition of music and movie awesomeness. I have the Ultra Surround setup paired with the SB-16 Ultra sub all powered by a Denon X2700H receiver. This system is the best I have ever heard much less owned. And for a good deal less than I would have paid for a few of the other brands I considered.
Very quick and easy process. Product arrived in a few days which is great for a heavy product that provides free shipping. Box was treated roughly judging from the outside of the box. Subwoofer was well protected and performs wonderfully. Lows are very low!
I could not be happier with my purchase of the SB16 Ultra. I first found SVS about a year ago when beginning my Home Theater addiction. Bought my first sub, which was the PB1000 Pro. Very impressive performance for the price point. As with any addiction, the desire for more and better quickly consumed my thoughts. When considering upgrades, I decided to try sealed over ported, since the ported sub was a tad boomy for me (not bad, but just not my preference). As such, I looked at the SB3000…then the SB4000. While both of those would have been worthy upgrades, I decided to skip the inevitable desire for future upgrades and jump straight to the top product stack with the SB16 Ultra. The price jump is considerable, but the performance jump far exceeds the cost. It’s just a mind blowing experience. Crisp, clean, and immense bass with little to effort from the SB16 Ultra. Great for both music and movies. I also like that the size difference of the SB16 Ultra when compared to the ported PB1000 Pro isn’t all that much. If you are on the fence about the SB16 Ultra and can comfortably afford the purchase, DO IT. You won’t regret it.
My experience with SVS purchasing my SB-16 was great throughout from ordering, delivery, to quick support call with set-up. And the sound… Replaced an old, but great Velodyne FSR-18 and the difference is visceral.
I was already a fan of the SB16 subwoofer. I was already running two of them in my system but I also use two in the rear of the room from another brand mostly for music using 15 inch woofers and a much lower power amplifier. Recently one of the rear subs went out so I thought I’d see what a third SB16 would sound like, not expected much difference. Boy was I wrong! I’d expected to actually return the sub as the cost was more compared to getting the other brand fixed but wow! After break in and room EQ, the difference is so noticeable, the low end is much more lower, tighter and pronounced during movies. The subsonic effects are much more powerful and deeper. I haven’t used them with music yet but the SVS subs are usually EQ to be too deep and tight for my taste in music, the other brand is still sealed but does not go as deep but has a smooth roll off and a looser woofer, blending in easier. The SB16 can probably be EQed to sound this way but causes everything in my room to rattle including the wall lights and window shades. This is a very powerful Sub with little to no distortion when pushed hard. Highly recommended.
The people, a shining star in service on all fronts. Speed, follow-up, knowledge...most of all respect and solutions. They will find a solution with or without keeping their equipment. There are very few companies I would put in such high regard as my experience with them.
I had previously reviewed the Ultra Towers I recently purchased and while they produce a nice bass tone that is really more than adequate (down to 28hz), I decided to use a SUB for the total package. Of course after having the SVS Ultra Towers, I knew only the SVS subs would please me. I looked through the selections and decided since I have the ultimate towers and wanted the ultimate sub also. I wasn't interested in adding a "boomy" bass, just filling in the lowest frequencies. I don't use the system for watching movies, only for music; therefore, I want accurate sound reproduction and chose the closed model instead of the ported model. I also use an equalizer that has a pink noise generator, mic and display so I set everything flat allowing for room acoustics. Needless to say, I made the right decision. I use a combination of the slider controls on the equalizer and the volume control on the sub to give a nice flat, across the total frequency range response. This allows my main amp to focus on the upper bass, the mid and the upper frequencies and it sounds FANTASTIC. SVS comes through for me again; fantastic products at a very reasonable price.
