The Home Theater Revolution, Sony Style

Thinking about upgrading to a projector for your home theater? With its perfect balance of price and quality, our Sony VPL-HW45ES Full SXRD Home Cinema Projector is just the right system for your needs. Featuring Sony’s vaunted SXRD technology and fully 3D ready, it’s an outstanding example of Sony quality -- at an affordable price point.

Movie Theater Fidelity, Right at Home

Sony isn’t just an electronics company. They also own a movie studio, and the understanding of what real projectors need to be successful this entails shows at every turn in the VPL-HW45ES. It’s outfitted with three of their top-of-the-line professional-grade SXRD color chips -- one each for red, green, and blue -- for deep, rich, and accurate colors. Only the Sony VPL series can provide this type of legendary performance.

The Best Picture, Period

Make any signal an HD signal with Sony’s fabled Reality Creation engine. And with its included Motionflow technology, you’ll never need to worry again about your refresh rate not matching up with your movies’ and TV shows’ frame rates. It’s the perfect two-part cinema tech combo, and one that gives the VPL-HW45ES the best picture of any projector in its class.

Vibrant, Cinematic Brightness

This dynamic lamp technology works together with rechargeable 3D glasses, too. With vibrant, truly cinematic brightness, your 3D library has never looked better. It’s also fully RF 3D compatible, so your favorite movies will look great with any pair of 3D glasses you (or your friends) happen to own.

No Extraneous Noise

Don’t let the projector itself ruin your home theater experience! With its whisper-quiet, 22 dB front-facing fan for superior cooling and throw distance -- without needing to worry about wall clearance -- you’ll hardly even remember it’s there. Just enjoy the sensation of watching movies in your home theater the way they were meant to be watched.

User-Friendly and Customizable

With nine amazing presets -- including special modes for 2D, 3D, and black and white movies, your gaming console, and watching your slideshows straight out of the box, the VPL-HW45ES is a cinch to set up and use. And true home theater buffs will love the incredible flexibility the deep 1.6x zoom ratio and lens shift offers. Perfect for any user in any situation.

Great Projector
I bought this projector a year and a half ago. The picture quality is great.

Excellent Projector
Bought this to replace an Epson 5030UB which, after only 3 years, developed the notorious "vertical blue line" problem which costs more to fix than the entire projector. So, back to Sony whom I know can be trusted to make a reliable product. Although the Epson was good, this is noticeably better. Detailed blacks are significantly superior without need for a grunting auto-aperture. Contrast and detail extract everything possible from the HiDef format. Image is sharp corner-to-corner with no fall-off in brightness. Frame interpolation eliminates "jerk-o-vision". Totally silent ventilation (Low lamp setting - we have a dark viewing room). Excellent controls on the remote with a great on-screen menu. The "Reality Creation" feature actually works. Turn it on and there is enhanced clarity and depth to images.

So what's missing? No motorized lens cover. Focus, zoom, image positioning are all manual. No keystone correction. None of this matters. They are set-and-forget. Don't need keystone correction. Looks to me like Sony put the money saved on these unnecessary features into image quality.

A couple of caveats... If you access a lot of content with different formats you might miss having zoom on the remote. Maximum brightness is not as high as the competition. If you intend viewing in a bright room that might be an issue. In my darkened room its plenty bright enough on Low lamp setting and about mid-range intensity setting. Absence of keystone adjustment means this unit is best ceiling mounted.

Tip: A projector will always yield a sharper, more evenly illuminated image at long throw. Try to mount well back from the screen. I'm using 20 ft. for a 10 ft. diagonal screen and it looks great.

Really really good
I got this a couple of years ago, and glad I made this purchase. Easily one of the best. Image is crisp, clear, vibrant and the black levels are deep. Glad I bought Sony and not other competing lower priced ones. Sony does stand out in terms of picture quality, reliability and delivers a fantastic movie. I use it on a 135" screen and love the movie experience every time I sit to watch blockbusters of my liking. Will hold on to it until 4K projectors are matured, and will definitely get a Sony then. Very very impressed and a happy Sony customer.

Good 1080P versus entry level 4K
This is the best projector I have ever had - choosing it was a bit challenging as so few retailers have projectors on display at all let alone for comparison - I had to rely on many on-line reviews - one key reviewer said that LCOS is to projectors what OLED is to flat panel TVs - further more he went on to say that he valued color accuracy and contrast over resolution anyday - having used this projector I have to agree - I took note of articles that said that many projectors in theaters are Sony brand units with LCOS and that Sony is one of the brands preferred by professional installers - I have used the projector to watch football and I have also re-watched favorite movies - the viewing experience with this projector exceeded my expectations - as mentioned in more than one online review this projector requires no calibration out of the box - it looks fine with low ambient light in the room but looks better the darker the room - as per several reviews the fan noise is almost inaudible - I thought that this projector would be a transitional projector until the price of laser based - ultra short throw 4 K projectors came down in price - Having used this projector I am not so sure - the image quality is quite good - the size and weight are manageable so I would consider taking it with me on some trips- essentially I am packing a 100+ inch TV - I expect that the lamp is bright enough to project on to some darker walls - the zoom range as well as the vertical and horizontal lense shift should make setup easier as compared to entry level projectors that do not have these features - in the end I opted for quality over bells and whistles and I am very satisfied

It’s worth the money to me
Picked up the 45 es a month ago and have about 120 hrs on it so far. It’s great. Screen was on back order so I just used the wall. No special paint just what was there and it was flawless. I’d like to see Sony sell it with the mounting bracket and a spare bulb for the price. But minor add on I guess.

Very bright detailed picture
My 8 year old JVC DLA X7 that I paid 6K for went dead. A friend recommended the 45ES at less than half the price of the JVC. I simply love it. One recommendation would to have a keystone correction on it but that is a small gripe. I hope 3D never dies. On a 120 inch screen the thing is detailed and bright.

How far can it project?
A shopper on Jan 5, 2019
Projection 'throw distance' is linked to screen size. The projector has an adequate zoom range for most typical applications. For specifics please contact us directly.
