Meet the Samsung SmartThings Hub
The SmartThings Hub is the heart of your smart home. It connects wirelessly with hundreds of compatible smart devices, allowing you to monitor, control, and secure your home from anywhere. This device is simple to install and easy to use with the free SmartThings app.
With a SmartThings Hub, you can connect smart sensors, lights, locks, cameras, and more to:
- Monitor your home from anywhere
- Control your home from the palm of your hand
- Secure your home and protect it from damage and danger
- Add any of the hundreds of compatible smart devices to enhance your home
The Hub requires wired Ethernet and power connections. Plugging the Hub into your Ethernet router and a wall outlet should be one of the first steps of your SmartThings experience. The Ethernet connection lets the Hub communicate with the SmartThings app, the SmartThings cloud, and supported devices that rely on IP or cloud-to-cloud connections instead of ZigBee or Z-Wave.
The Hub contains a ZigBee radio (2.4GHz) and a Z-Wave radio (900MHz). These allow the Hub to communicate with your ZigBee and Z-Wave devices. The Hub is also future-ready to support Bluetooth.
Local Processing Capabilities
Some functionalities can now run locally with Hub. Some of the processing that has previously existed in the cloud, like for certain SmartApps and device types, now automatically occurs locally in the Hub. This means much faster response time, improved performance, and reduced latency. Certain automations driven by ZigBee or Z-Wave devices will no longer have to make that round trip from the device, to the Hub, up to the cloud, and back.
What exactly does Hub have under the hood? You’re looking at: 1GHz ARM Cortex-A9, 512MB DDR3 RAM, and 4GB FLASH.
To keep everything running smoothly, the Hub needs power. So what happens if the power goes out? Hub now comes with 4 AA batteries. This battery backup allows certain automations to continue, even without power, for about 10 hours. See? Smarter!
With the Hub and Samsung's new app, SmartThings is preparing to provide video capabilities for improved home security and peace of mind. You’ll be able to view live video feeds, monitor your home, get event-based notifications, and automate video clip recording. Clips will be processed through the Hub and stored in the cloud, allowing for easy, secure access and viewing. Clip recording will be a premium paid feature of Smart Home Monitor, but all users can currently enjoy it for free.
To set the groundwork for future expansion, the Hub includes two USB ports.
