Rega Planar 3 Turntable Overview

Turns out those Brits can do more than throw great weddings. They also build some amazing analog audio equipment. Take Rega’s stellar line of turntables and accessories, now available at World Wide Stereo. Rega’s legendary dedication to vinyl reproduction shines through in every model they’ve made since the early ‘70s. And no single model demonstrates that dedication better than the Planar 3, hailed as the highest-value entry-level audiophile turntable since its original introduction in 1977. Now in its fifth generation, the Planar 3 shares only two parts (the dustcover and hinges) with previous iterations. Everything else has been reengineered from the plinth up – the arm, the motor, the platter – using the latest materials and techniques to extract the final bit of fidelity out of your treasured LPs. Light yet sturdy, low noise without excessive mass, incredibly musical from top to bottom, the new Planar 3 represents a reasonable price of entry to the highest echelons of high fidelity. That’s why What Hi-Fi named it Product of the Year two years running, and Herb Reichert of Stereophile magazine raves in his review, “I love the way Rega Research's new Planar 3 navigates my black discs. I love the way it honors musicians.”

Impeccably stiff, from upper lip…

Rega has been perfecting tonearm engineering for nearly 40 years, with two broad goals – frictionless movement horizontally and vertically, with no free play in the arm. The P3 turntable’s RB330 arm approaches both ideals with a precision bearing assembly matched to a one-piece aluminum tubular tonearm that distributes its low mass to eliminate resonance. The whole mechanism is braced not once, but twice, from tonearm to central bearing, for overall stability.

…Right down to the bum

Those who expect turntables to carry some heft might be surprised to pick up a Rega. The whole package, while just 13 lbs., is engineered to minimize external vibration and resonance. The plinth (basically, the base) is formed of high-gloss laminated acrylic, fitted with newly-designed low-vibration feet. The package is quiet, sturdy, and attractive enough to fit with any modern décor.

Driven for accuracy

The belt-drive turntable (actually, the original Planar 3 helped popularize belt drives) helps reduce noise or “rumble” transfer from the frequency-locked 24-volt synchronous motor system. The belt wraps around a redesigned polycarbonate sub-platter for enhanced accuracy and long wear.

Polished off with glass

A floating-glass platter with polished white edge, topped with a felt mat, rests above the sub-platter, and the entire assembly spins effortlessly around a central hub with stainless spindle and enhanced brass bearings. Keep in mind that the P3 is truly a “manual” turntable – which means, to shift speeds from 33 to 45 rpm, you lift the glass platter off and shift the belt along its pulley.

Pairs perfectly with…

Since a phono cartridge is not included with this turntable, you’ll be looking for a top-notch one, so why not look at Rega’s own Elys 2 moving magnet cartridge, which you can get packaged and pre-installed with the P3. Or feel free to customize you choice, say, with any of the top-notch Ortofon line. Remember, shop with confidence with World Wide’s 60-day guarantee and expert product support. Oh, and as you spin up the Planar 3, don’t forget the buttered scones and a spot of tea.

Can you attach speakers to it? Do you need to?
Recordrhi on Feb 7, 2022
Thanks for your question. The Rega Planar 3 is available with, or without a pre-installed cartridge. It must be connected to the phono input on a receiver, amplifier, or powered speakers that include a built-in phono preamplifier. It has no provision to connect speakers directly to it. Please call us at 866.961.7781. Our product specialists are here to assist if you have further questions. Thanks.
Does this arm have VTA and azimuth adjustment?
A shopper on Nov 20, 2021
Thanks for your inquiry. VTA is not an issue on any Rega with a factory installed cartridge. The precision RB330 tonearm on the Planar 3 has no azimuth adjustment capability. An azimuth misalignment may be caused by an imperfectly mounted stylus or a bent cantilever, both of which are very, very rare occurrences. An azimuth error will usually result in inconsistent measured crosstalk left to right and right to left. Attached link by Roy Gandy (founder of Rega) offers some insight into VTA:
Does this have an external ground?
A shopper on Mar 19, 2021
Thanks for your inquiry. Rega wires the chassis ground with the left channel shield (ground) on the RCA cables. This eliminates the necessity of a separate ground.
