Rega Elex-R Integrated Amplifier

Rega Elex-R Integrated Amplifier Overview

Whatever Rega makes, you can count on analog reproduction being front and center. So it’s no surprise that the British turntable specialist’s full-size integrated Elex-R amp starts with a top-quality phono stage, adds an array of analog inputs and outputs, and maintains flexibility alongside elegant simplicity and ultimate fidelity. You get a conservatively engineered, reasonably powered amplifier with full stability into difficult and lower speaker loads. You get an impressively clean front-panel presentation – volume knob, input switch with indicator lights, mute indicator, and power button. You get a compact remote to control the basics. You get no tone controls, no digital signal trickery, not even a headphone jack – nothing that Rega suspects would get in the way of sonic superiority. Just low-noise, low-distortion circuitry, input to output, and intricate attention to engineering detail. In short, the Elex-R makes the perfect centerpiece of any stereo system where audio presentation is paramount. That’s why What Hi-Fi?, in its five-star review, called the Elex-R a “fine achievement; the kind of product that gets straight to the heart of the music and conveys all the emotion in the recording with ease.”

Start with the sound

In an age of digital wizardry, it’s unusual to get your hands on a unit such as the Elex-R. But Rega’s single-minded dedication to sonic superiority shines through. Rega’s engineers eschew tone controls, DACs and DSPs, opting instead for top-quality discrete and integrated components in the circuitry, and lowest noise, least distortion and truest fidelity.

Superior phono stage

The Elex-R’s phono circuitry is specifically designed with top-shelf discrete components to extract the highest fidelity from turntables with moving-magnet cartridges. RIAA equalization accuracy is flat beyond the range of human hearing, and the noise floor is vanishingly low. (Got a low-output moving-coil cartridge such as the Planar 6/Ania combo? You’ll still want a separate Fono MC stage.)

A twist on the volume control

Rega boasts that the Elex-R sports a combined feedback/passive volume control (yes, it’s the only knob on the entire unit!). Described as a sort of a hybrid between a microcontroller and a rotary control, it’s designed tighter tracking between channels, with lower distortion and less of an effect on the sound.

Power to spare

Compared to some of today’s mega-digital surround receivers, the Elex-R’s 72.5 watts per channel at 8 ohms may seem modest. But reviewers and users universally have found that the Elex-R’s real-world power delivery is more than adequate for today’s top speakers, and even difficult 4-ohm loads (with 113 watts) are handled without hiccup. The Elex-R’s power amp with beefed-up toroidal transformer operates in near “Class-A” territory, which boiled down means vanishingly low distortion and musicality right up to the clipping point.

Simple to hook up, simple to operate

Ease of setup and use is a Rega hallmark. Lights on the front indicate input switching and mute; a single knob controls volume, and a power switch illuminates the red Rega logo. A compact remote controls basic functions from your listening position. A row of RCA jacks on back accommodates one phono and four line-level inputs, plus a outputs for recording and pre-amp output (ahead of the volume control, for future amp upgrading). You get just one set of speaker terminals – no tone controls, no headphone jack, no extra switches, nothing fancy. So nothing stands between you and the music.

Generally class A is not that efficint. At low levels power is transferred into heat. The elex-r is typed class A. Does that mean it heats up at low levels?
Rowexz on Sep 8, 2020
Thanks so much for your email. Only part of the circuit path is Class A so the amplifier is benefiting from a combination technologies which allow the amplifier to have incredible musicality and detail but not some of the more problematic aspects of technology. The amp stays relatively cool to the touch, remembering that in general terms heat is the native environment for all amplifiers. This is an exception al sound amplifier that will reveal the subtle detail of the speakers connected to it. I hope that helps and please enjoy.
Does it have subwoofer output?
Jeff G on Jun 29, 2019
  There is no sub out.
