Must have for any McIntosh fan, or anyone interested in Hi-Fi history
Great book. Though a bit pricey, the binding, photography and text are all first - rate. Being a McIntosh fan and owner, this was a no-brainer for me. The text is very well written with many interviews with the folks who made McIntosh one of the most prestigious brands in audio worldwide. Many interesting sidebars related to specific product development and the engineers who brought McIntosh to the forefront of high-end audio.

Many folks either are not aware of the history here, or have lost sight of the fact that this company is named McIntosh LABORATORIES for a reason. Unlike many other audio brands, this is very much an engineering based company. Its founders were audio engineers, and the majority of the company officers to this day(nearly 73 years later) are still audio engineers. Charles Randall, the current president was very active in product development and engineering prior to his ascension to president.

The company owns and has on site it's own anechoic, reverberant, and EMF chambers. Its engineering department includes mechanical, electronic, acoustical, software, and industrial design departments. McIntosh design and build quality is second to none in their field.

This is a vertically oriented company, which is also described in the text. Their products are built virtually entirely in-house in Binghampton, NY. Sheetmetal, paint, powder coating, PCB population, transformer winding, glass cutting and coating - all done in house by McIntosh employees(many of whom have been there for decades). Numerous QC tests at all stages of production. McIntosh products are expensive, but there is good reason for it.

My only criticism of the book is that it apparently was published in 2006, so it only covers up through 2005. Much has happened since then. It would be nice to see an amended revised edition released. Nonetheless, this is a fine book for both the McIntosh fan as well as anyone interested in the history of hi-fi sound reproduction. Highly recommended.

I'm very interested in the history of home audio -- particularly from the 1960s and 1970s (the early heyday of stereo), and am the proud owner of several McIntosh pieces, including vintage separates (C28 & MC 2505) and some MAC receivers: 1700, 1900, and 4100.
