Klipsch RP-500SA Reference Premiere Dolby Atmos Speakers Overview

The latest entry in the company’s upgraded Reference Premiere line, the RP-500SAs are certified by Dolby Labs to deliver every zoom and boom of the latest blockbusters filmed in immersive overhead and all-around surround. Angled to bounce effects off the ceiling, they’re guaranteed to tear the roof off the sucker in any room, whether you’re watching movies or listening to your music dancing on the ceiling. But more than that, they’re versatile enough to serve as simple surround speakers just by flicking a switch to shift crossover frequencies from Atmos to full-range. Built with traditional Klipsch attention to detail, and incorporating such innovations as Tractrix horns and Cereametallic woofers, the RP-500SAs are designed to match the company’s floorstanding, bookshelf, center and subwoofer units perfectly. They deliver the dynamics demanded by today’s soundtracks, pair perfectly with the majority of modern home theater receivers, and transform any space into convincing cinema, concert hall or game arena.

The trademark Tractrix horn

A core element of Klipsch speakers has always been the horn. Flared 90 degrees vertically and horizontally, the unique Tractrix horn acts as acoustic amplification for the high-frequency driver, not only adding efficiency but also enhancing localization and surround effects. The Tractrix horn, molded of compressed silicon composite and fitted with a phase plug to reduce resonances, places you in the middle of the action central at center stage with your favorite performers.

A tweaked tweeter

At the center of that horn is Klipsch’s improved tweeter design, a 1-inch titanium-diaphragm driver for lightness and rigidity, with high efficiency and low distortion. The proven LTS (linear travel suspension) technology maximizes the piston motion, and an all-new vented housing reduces the reflected waves that can compromise performance.

That iconic copper cone

Even before you power it up, you can always spot a Klipsch thanks to the emblematic copper-colored cone. The 5.25-inch low-frequency driver in the RP-500SA is made of Klipsch’s proprietary spun-copper Cerametallic material, adding stiffness while subtracting weight for superior transient reproduction and high efficiency.

Takes a licking and keeps on kicking

Klipsch’s efficient horn-loading design, combined with ultra-light and ultra-responsive drivers, means that the RP-500SAs can handle the dynamic range of today’s movie soundtracks – and are rugged enough to rock the house when called for, with peak power capacity up to 300 watts. These surrounds match perfectly with nearly all of today’s surround receivers and amps.

Versatility at the flick of a switch

7.1.2? 5.1.4? Whatever number you play in the surround-sound lottery, the RP-500SA will play along. Aim four of these toward the ceiling, atop your speakers or a high shelf, as elevation for a 5.1.4 setup; use two for a 7.1.2 arrangement – and hang two more on the wall behind or aside you as surrounds. The RP-500SA does double duty as surround or elevation at the flick of a switch on the back. (Dolby specifies stringent requirements for Atmos speakers.) One speaker, multiple purposes, with the all-around excellence you expect from a Klipsch.

Standout appearance

The cabinetry is made of solid reinforced MDF material and finished in scratch-resistant ebony. Combined with the unique look of copper cones, satin painted baffle, anodized trim rings and laser-etched logos, the RP-500SA looks right at home resting atop your current speakers, or hanging on any wall, with or without the attractive and flexible grille attached.

Inexpensive Way to Add Atmos
If you've been wanting to add Dolby Atmos to your system, check out the Klipsch RPO-500SA up-firing speakers.

These speakers fire the sound to the ceiling to simulate ceiling speakers.
This would not produce better sound than ceiling speakers, but the RP-500SA speakers make a definite improvement in your system.

If space and budget are a consideration, pick up these Klipsch speakers.

Works great, arrived fast, and in immaculate condition
I upgraded these from the 41SA's as part of my project to move to the premier line, these guys are massive and clearly meant to be wall/ceiling mounted or set ontop of like-klipsch(dimensions and aesthetic). floorstanding speakers. The have an Atmos and Surround mode to physically switch to and from as needed. I have them in the ceiling firing down in Atmos mode and they are fantastic.

Amazing sound and looks great on the wall

Love them, they make a huge difference in sound and really add the the HT experience.
These are fantastic! I bought two pairs for my set up and have no regrets. The color and design of the RP500SA match the first Generation Reference Premiere RP-280F'S, RP-250S and RP-450C the only thing that you can tell is different is the grill mesh of the RP500SA'S. Its more thicker more brittle looking and less transparent vs the more softer and semi transparent meshbof the Rp-280f's. But from far you cant really tell the difference.

These 5.25 inch Atmos Speakers are quite Heavy and a little tricky to install, but once they are on you can really hear the detail on helicopters or planes flying over you in a movie and shattering glass. The horn tweeter is the real winner here with is crispy Clarity. I love them and plan to make my Home theater a 7.2.6 set up with a Denon AVR-X8500H which i will most likely buy from World Wide Stereo. I highly recommend them. These klipsch speakers are very efficient and seem not to need that much power to get loud.

Do you mount speakers toward ceiling, reverseed by the picture you show on web site, tout lookes like it is facing down?
A shopper on Jan 15, 2019
These can be placed on top of existing tower speakers facing the ceiling, on a wall facing down towards the listening position.
could these be paired with a klipsch sound bar? The surround sound speakers that came with the sound bar that I purchased from wws are so terrible and useless .....its disappointing because the sound bar and sub are just amazing for just being a sound bar .
mattie on Apr 10, 2020
Thanks for your question. The Klipsch RP-500SA are conventionally wired surround speakers. Klipsch has wireless bookshelf speakers - R-41PM, RW51M, and R-51PM that could function as surround speakers. Without knowing the Klipsch SoundBar model we cant confirm if they would pair.
