The trademark Tractrix horn

A core design element in Klipsch speakers, the unique Tractrix horns, flared 90 degrees vertically and horizontally, act as acoustic amplification for the high-frequency drivers. The horn not only makes the RP-502S more efficient, but also disperses the highs for maximum surround effects. The Tractrix horns are molded of compressed silicon composite and fitted with phase plugs to reduce resonances.

An upgraded tweeter

At the center of those Tractrix horns is Klipsch’s latest-design tweeter design. The 1-inch drivers, with titanium diaphragms for lightness and rigidity, boast high efficiency and low distortion. The proven LTS (linear travel suspension) technology maximizes piston motion, and all-new vented housings reduce the reflected (or standing) waves that can compromise performance.

Those iconic copper cones

Even before you power it up, you can always spot a Klipsch thanks to the emblematic copper-colored cones. The dual 4-inch woofers in the RP-402S are formed of Klipsch’s proprietary spun-copper Cerametallic composite, which adds stiffness while subtracting weight for superior transient reproduction and high efficiency.

A truly dynamic range

Klipsch’s horn-loaded design, combined with ultra-light and ultra-responsive drivers with custom coils and magnets, allows speakers such as the RP-402S to reproduce the full dynamic range demanded by today’s soundtracks. Efficiency, paired with power-handling capability, means Klipsch speakers pair perfectly with most of today’s home-theater receivers and amps.

Designed to be displayed

The cabinetry is made of solid MDF material reinforced for minimal internal resonances, with your choice of scratch-resistant ebony or walnut finish. Combined with the unique copper cones and anodized rings, laser-etched logo and flared horn, the RP-402S looks right at home handing proudly on the wall or sitting on the shelf, with or without the attractive and flexible magnetic grilles attached.

What would you recommend for speaker stands for the Klipsch RP 402S surround speakers?
BARRY M on May 30, 2020
Thanks for your question. The RP-402S have a wide footprint (10.26) which does not lend itself to sitting securely on a speaker stands typical 6 X 6 top plate. Klipsch does not offer a floor stand. We sell a number of Sanus floor stands but none with a wide top plate. There are numerous floor stands and wall mounts available from third party suppliers but many require the use of attachment hardware. Many customers are not keen on bolting or screwing into the cabinet to mount to a top plate. Omnimount has a number of wall brackets that screw into the back of the speaker cabinet. We are not aware of a floor stand that offers a clamping mechanism that would mate to the RP-402S.
What is the difference between the 250s v. The 402s? Second question, I am just looking to set up a 4 speaker stereo system, two klipsch RP-500Ms in front. Will these speakers when used in tandem provide better surround sound characteristics than using two more RP-500M in back?
A shopper on Feb 4, 2020
  Thanks for your questions.
The RP-402S and RP-250S are both designed as surround speakers either side (7.2), or rear (5.1.) They are very similar, the 402S uses two 4 low frequency drivers and the 250S uses 2 5 low frequency drivers, tweeters are virtually the same.
4 speaker stereo: (using a home theater surround receiver in the 4 speaker mode which processes 2 channel music sources through front mains and rear surrounds) OR a 2 channel stereo with A speakers driving the front B speakers driving the rears.
In either setup the fronts should be conventional 2 way front firing speakers offering a wide sound stage and precise front localization. Proposing 2 pairs of conventional speakers, side by side in front or a pair in front and a pair in back? If you want room filling sound locate them in each corner. Doing so will pretty much ruin any front sound stage.
Using the surround speakers in the rear may preserve some front imaging and fill the room.
Using a surround mode on a surround receiver may yield, or maintain front sounstage at the same time as the back surrounds add a 3 dimensional effect in Pro-Logic or Pro-Logic II.
