KLH Albany 2-Way Bookshelf Loudspeakers Overview

Purchased by longtime industry execs in early 2017, KLH is back with a full line of new-design speakers – and a rededication to the company’s original mission to make the audiophile experience affordable for all. The Albany two-way bookshelf system honors that heritage, and hearkens back to one of audio’s earliest innovations – the acoustic suspension speaker. Coaxing unexpectedly big sound out of small boxes, acoustic suspension extends the bass response of bookshelf speakers to match, and often exceed, that of much larger systems. And the Albany delivers that sonic purity right across its frequency range, with custom-designed woofer/midrange drivers of woven Kevlar, crossover circuitry of the highest-quality components, an anodized aluminum dome tweeter, and solid, sturdy MDF cabinetry available in two real wood veneers – black oak and walnut. The new KLH is so confident that you will continue to enjoy its products for a long time that it offers an unheard-of 10-year warranty on its speakers.

From the heartland, from the heart

The new KLH, located in the USA’s heartland – Noblesville, Indiana – pays homage to the brand by building incredible value into every speaker. The Albanys start with superior materials – woven Kevlar cones with die-cast aluminum baskets, anodized aluminum domes, brushed aluminum faceplates, MDF cabinetry with real wood veneers, nickel-plated binding posts, top-quality crossover components – and add in decades of engineering and design experience, to deliver speakers that look as good as they sound, and sound better than some far more expensive competitors.

Big, bass sound in a bookshelf speaker

Among the many innovations popularized by audio pioneer Henry Kloss – the K of the original KLH – one of the most influential is the acoustic suspension speaker. Up to the early ‘60s, to get big sound you needed a big speaker. But Kloss helped turn that notion on its head, by sealing smaller speaker cabinets in such a way that controlled and extended the bass response to surprisingly low frequencies. That’s why compact speakers such as today’s Albany can deliver deep, natural bass right from your bookshelf.

Behind the real-wood veneer...

Each Albany begins with a 5-1/4 inch woofer/midrange driver cone of Kevlar for strength and stiffness, suspended via flexible, durable butyl rubber, in a powder-coated, die-cast aluminum basket with oversized magnet. The 1-inch dome tweeter is formed of anodized aluminum for crystal clarity, linear response and maximum dispersion. The crossover circuits are built with the highest-grade discrete components, and all are tied together with braided tinsel wiring. The Albany reaches down to 35Hz, and up beyond hearing to 23kHz, with flat frequency response (+/- 3dB) and a surprisingly wide soundstage.

Got extra channels?

The nickel-plated binding posts handle multiple speaker wire connections, from bare wire to banana plugs. And, if your amp or surround receiver has a couple channels to spare, the Albany is one of the lowest-priced speakers around to offer a bi-amping option (connections are supplied to separately power the lows and highs) for ultra-clean sonic reproduction.

Looks great covered or uncovered

The cabinet is finished in genuine wood veneers (choice of black oak or walnut). And the magnetic clasps for the honeycombed grille are hidden, so if you prefer your speaker systems naked, the Albany’s fully finished front panel with brushed aluminum speaker faceplates will happily oblige any exhibitionist tendencies.

Pairs perfectly with…

Build your whole home theater with KLH: Add the Story Center Channel Speaker, and a pair or more of the Beacon Surrounds, for the cinematic experience at an unusually compact size – and price. In fact, the entire KLH line shares a sonic signature, so you can confidently mix and match a system that suits your needs. And you always can count on World Wide Stereo’s 60-day guarantee.

Henry Kloss’s legacy

Back in the 1950s and early ‘60s, a band of engineers revolutionized the audio world and ushered in the golden age of high fidelity. Among them, possibly the most revered and warmly remembered is Kloss, an inveterate tinkerer and serial entrepreneur who started such influential companies as AR, Advent, Cambridge Soundworks and Tivoli Audio. Kloss’ many influential innovations include acoustic-suspension speakers, projection TVs, tape recorders with Dolby noise reduction, full-range electrostats, and table radios with incredible performance. To honor his memory, the revamped KLH named its new speaker line for streets on and around Kloss’ beloved Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus in Cambridge, Mass.

Superb sound for a small enclosure.
I am quite impressed with the overall frequency response of the Albanys coming from such a small enclosure. Good bass and treble.

I am partial to the sound of acoustic suspension loudspeakers, and the Albanys meet the bill and look nice. Well made.

Thank you World Wide Stereo (and KLH for returning)

Great sounding speakers
KLH Albany bookshelf speakers.. After receiving my speakers, I put them to the test right away with different music, and they sounded great! I can’t believe for such a small speaker the large sound they produced.. They have a very good tight bass and crisp and clean highs. For the price, it’s a no brainer!!!!!

What is the exact size of the cabinet of this speaker? Some web sites say 8.25' and some say 9.5' for depth.
A shopper on Oct 20, 2018
Based on the specifications published by the manufacturer, the correct cabinet depth is 8.25'. The 9.5' depth is possibly a depth for the shipping box which was mistakenly used instead. Thank you!
Hi, did you have a chance to test these? If you did, how do these sound in your opinion? How are the mids and highs? I understand the bass is supposed to be really good. Thank you.
A shopper on Aug 1, 2018
We LOVE the new KLH speakers! Very musical sound, neutral and not 'pumped up' in any way. They also have great fit & finish and are an exceptional value.
