What Obsession Sounds Like

  • There’s a fine line between loving music and being obsessed with it. When it comes to making music sound the best it can sound, Definitive Technology has a hard time believing that good enough is acceptable. It has to be flawless. Perfect. Uncompromising. In short, they think it would be crazy to give music anything less than everything it deserves.

Great Sound! But lacking a very important feature.
Just bought this and really like the sound and quality of the system. However, I was very disappointed to find there is no HDMI ARC support! This really limits the abilities of the upper end smart TVs - which is what the vast majority of buyers will have considering the price point of W Studio. Lost a "star" due to this. If you don't care about utilizing the your streaming abilities of your Smart TV or if you are happy with the 2 channel audio of the optical cable when you do, then you'll be overjoyed with this model.

W Studio Sound Bar
I agree with the previously listed reviews. This sound bar sounds great, but the software is very limited. I listened to both the Def Tech W Studio and the Sonos Playbar (with sub) when I was making my decision on a sound bar. I ultimately ended up purchasing the W Studio since it just sounded so much better than the Playbar. Now that I have had the W Studio sound bar for several months (since November) I am still thrilled with the purchase, but if I was looking at this primarily as a base for whole house background audio I would also look at the Sonos products. Bottom line though, for movies especially the W Studio sounds great.

You don't really get surround effects from this unit but it sounds like a terrific 3.1 system. I strongly recommend the W Studio if your goal is to find a sound bar to enhance your TV/movie viewing. Hopefully Def Tech continues to enhance the software.

Sonos really is a software company and Def Tech a quality speaker manufacturer and you see that with this unit.

Fantastic speakers - terrible software
This is a fantastic sound bar and I'm extremely happy with it for TV and music. Sound is great. The 3 HDMI inputs on the speaker make it a great fit for my family room set up. Setting it up for the speakers was a breeze... but I still haven't been able to get the system to learn my primary remote.

While the speaker is great, the play-fi software is not good in my opinion. It needs a LOT of work. Not many streaming options so far (hopefully more will come soon), the individual mobile apps don't work all that well and the UI isn't all that great. I haven't been able to get the PC app to work yet, and there is no OS X app. I would love to replace my sonos multi-room system with other definitive wireless speakers but thats not happening until the software is at least comparable.

That being said... this speaker is great for TV.

I bought this on 12/24. I have it in the living room along with two W7s paired as a stereo in the rear. I absolutely love the sound of music with the pairing. My only desire is for them to update PlayFi so that the soundbar can utilize the W7 stereo pair as rear speakers for true 5.1 surround for movies as well as music. The mids, lows, and highs are well balanced. I've heard sounds in movies that I've never heard before. Most of the app bugs in the earlier reviews seem to have been resolved. I did notice one bug where the music gets louder upon opening the camera app but that should be easily fixable in a software update.

Love the flexibility!
We bought this 9 months ago but due to home building weather delays have only been using it for 5 months. It's great. The fact that you can wire components into AND out of this soundbar has worked out well for us. THree of our components go straight to the soundbar, and from them with an optical cable into the TV. One HDMI goes from the receiver and then down to the soundbar. With the multiple input/output choices and with our 2 zone receiver, we are also able to control whether the input comes out of the soundbar OR the built-in ceiling speakers.

It gives a good sound and the wireless subwoofer (because it only needs power) can be placed anywhere near an electrical outlet--it doesn't also need its own wiriting for sound.

Great system and even better customer service
I've owned my W Studio Sound Bar since Nov (6 months) and it has been great. It is easy to setup with minimal wires. It sounds great and is easy to use. I did have an issue with the sub woofer where it stopped working but I had the best technical support service I have ever had - hands down with any product I have ever purchased anywhere. The customer support line is posted on their website and there is not a 50 deep automated menu. Two menus in and you have a person who speaks clear English and listens and cares about your issue. A company that stands behind its product. Super pleased with my purchase and I would recommend this brand to anyone. I also bought a individual wireless Definitive speaker when I bought the sound bar and I use it in my room. I love that speaker too. I sometimes move it out to my garage when I'm working outside.

Remarkable Sound, Spoken Voice and Movie Enjoyment
After researching a sound system for a master bedroom with a sitting area, I chose the DefinitiveTechnology W Studio. The quality of sound, spoken voice (especially in Night Mode) and movies are exactly what I needed (and hoped they would be,) I'm critical when things don't work, so I was pleased that I had no difficulties setting up the sound bar and subwoofer, using three HDMI inputs from Cable, Apple TV/Roku and a quality Blue Ray Player. With Blue Ray, there is remarkable Digital Dolby and DTS sound reproduction. Yes the W Studio is costly. Yes it is reliable. Yes the remote and the software needs some tweaking and improvement. Fortunately I was able to find a local showroom that was kind enough to unpack the W Studio so that I could audition the unit. I've had only enjoyment since the purchase. The W Studio is in my master bedroom. It's soundstage is somewhere between a 3.1 and a 5.1 system. It is a sound bar and not a 5 speaker system, but if is remarkably good with an acceptable sound field. My home's major sound room has Rotel amps, and pre-amps/receiver and B&W speakers. Comparing systems: A true surround system is preferable, but I can tell you that the W Studio's sound quality and wi fi subwoofer competes very well - especially in the odd angled room it is in.

This product sounds great! Had some issues with the play-fi, but after reconfiguring my wireless router, it works great. I can't remember the last time it disconnected.
