Bowers & Wilkins 606 Bookshelf Speaker Overview

A small speaker that packs a decided punch, Bowers & Wilkins’ new 606 bookshelf model shares more than a brand name with its upscale corporate cousins. Bowers & Wilkins entire revamped 600 line brings many of the technological innovations of the highly regarded 800 and 700 series to a popular price point. Whether placed on a bookshelf or installed on its optional stand, the 606  excels – starting with the revolutionary Continuum cone woofer/midrange, based on a design developed for their 800 Diamond series. The 6.5-inch cone delivers superior imaging and detailing thanks to its low-mass, low-distortion construction, while the rear bass port adds oomph well beyond the speaker’s size. The 1-inch Decoupled Double Dome tweeter has an ultra-light, ultra-stiff aluminum cone bonded to an aluminum ring, all driven by a neodymium magnet and decoupled from the cabinet by a gel-filled housing, for crisp transients and wide soundstage. Magnetic latches are invisible for a stylish presentation with or without the grille, and matte black or white finishes blend into any home décor.

Product Information

The 606 standmount loudspeaker in the new 600 Series from Bowers & Wilkins transforms your home with pristine sound. Whether it’s sitting on a bookshelf or stand, the 606 allows you to hear music the way it was supposed to be heard. Featuring B&W’s cutting-edge Continuum cone technology, the 606 creates a pure and precise soundscape.

Developed over an eight-year period and first featured on the flagship 800 Series Diamond models, the Continuum cone has been integrated into the sixth generation of the critically acclaimed 606. But the new 606 speaker isn’t just about cleaner sound – it boasts a cleaner look, too. The grille pegs have been removed and replaced with magnets, while moving the port to the rear cabinet, creating a modern and premium aesthetic perfect for surround sound in the living room or stereo listening at its finest. And now with matte finishes in black and white, they add a clean look to every room. Enjoy a beautiful sound session with the 606.

Continuum: A break with the past

Since the 1970s, Bowers & Wilkins has pioneered the use of Kevlar in speaker cones, a fabric prized for low-mass resiliency, which means it can move fast and far with less breakup and distortion. After years of research, the company came up with an improved material it calls Continuum, reducing breakup even further, particularly at the edges. First introduced in the line-topping 800 series, Bowers & Wilkins now brings this advance to the entry level – and replaces its iconic yellow cones with the silvery surface of Continuum.

Decoupling the Dome

The tweeter continues along the innovation curve with triple-D – Decoupled Double Dome technology. A 1-inch ultra-light aluminum diaphragm is surrounded by an aluminum ring for stability around the outer edges, where breakup is most likely to occur. Together they push what Bowers & Wilkins calls the “breakup frequency” of the tweeter to 38kHz, to minimize interaction in the audible range and extend the highs beyond human hearing. And the entire assembly is surrounded by a gel-filled ring to minimize interaction with the cabinet and improve dispersion.

Peeling back layers

Together, the CC low/midrange speaker and the DDD tweeter draw a rich, deep soundstage that peels back the layers of the music – or the movie – to reveal greater detail and clarity.

Adjustable bass reflex port

The bass port in the 606 has been moved to the rear of the cabinet, for cleaner visual presentation, and foam plugs are included to fine-tune the bass output to the positioning in the room, so you can confidently place the 606s close to, or far from, bounding walls.

Buttoned-down British style

As opposed to the strikingly attention-getting curves of Bowers & Wilkins’ top models, the 606 stands serene, with attractive matte black or white finish to blend with any décor, and invisible magnetic latches for display with or without grille. Dual binding posts offer the flexibility to connect separate amp channels for the highs and lows.

A stellar home theater setup

Set up a pair of the 606s in front, with Bowers & Wilkins' new matching 607s as surrounds and its HTM6 front and center, and you have a moderately-priced home theater setup with the level of sonic precision that has made their speakers the envy of audiophiles everywhere.
