Bowers & Wilkins 603 Floorstanding Speaker Overview

Bowers & Wilkins’ latest 603 floorstanding speakers share more than just a brand name with their upscale corporate brethren. The entire revamped 600 series brings many of the technological innovations of the highly regarded 800 and 700 series to a price point more accessible to music lovers. This sixth-generation 603, the flagship of the British speaker company’s entry-level line, starts with the revolutionary Continuum cone midrange, based on a design developed for Bowers & Wilkins’ top-of-the-line 800 Diamond series. The 6.5-inch cone delivers superior imaging and detailing in the most significant frequency range. The 1-inch Decoupled Double Dome tweeter has an ultra-light, ultra-stiff aluminum cone bonded to an aluminum ring, all decoupled from the cabinet by a gel-filled housing, for crisp distortion-free transients and wide soundstage. And pumping out impressive bass, dual 6.5-inch woofers are augmented by a bass-reflex rear port. Magnetic latches are invisible for a stylish presentation with or without the grille, and matte black or white finishes blend into any home décor.

Product Information

The floorstanding speaker in the new 600 Series from Bowers & Wilkins brings pristine sound to your home. The flagship 603 speaker features B&W award-winning Continuum cone technology, which creates a pure and precise soundscape. Developed over an eight-year period and first featured on the flagship 800 Series Diamond models, the Continuum cone has been integrated into the sixth generation of the critically acclaimed 603 to transform the performance you expect from an entry-level speaker.

The 603 features the proven Decoupled Double Dome tweeter, with a re-engineered assembly for better performance. The improved paper bass cones combine effortless power and endless low-end with the precision and low-distortion accuracy you’d expect from Bowers & Wilkins. But the new 603 speaker isn’t just about cleaner sound – it boasts a cleaner look, too. The grille pegs have been removed and replaced with magnets, while moving the port to the rear cabinet, creating a modern and premium aesthetic, wrapped with a matte finish. Fill your home with beautiful Bowers & Wilkins sound.

Continuum: A break with the past

Since the 1970s, Bowers & Wilkins has pioneered the use of Kevlar as a speaker-cone material. It’s prized for its low-mass resiliency, which means it can move fast and far with less breakup and distortion. After eight years of research, the company came up with an improved material it calls Continuum, which reduces cone breakup even further, particularly at the edges. First introduced in the line-topping 800 series, Bowers & Wilkins now brings this advance to entry-level price points – and replaces its iconic yellow cones with the silvery surface of Continuum.

Decoupling the Dome

The tweeter continues along the innovation curve with the triple-D – Decoupled Double Dome technology. A 1-inch ultra-light aluminum diaphragm is surrounded by an aluminum ring for stability around the outer edges, where breakup is most likely to occur. Together they push what Bowers & Wilkins calls the “breakup frequency” of the tweeter to 38kHz, to minimize interactions in the audible range, and extend the highs beyond human hearing. And the whole assembly is surrounded by a gel-filled ring to minimize interactions with the cabinet and improve dispersion.

Peeling back layers

Together, the CC mid and the DDD tweeter draw a rich, deep soundstage that peels back the layers of the music – or the movie – to reveal greater detail and clarity.

Keeping Kevlar for the bottom end

Bringing up the bass, Bowers & Wilkins returns to Kevlar, woven into paper cones, for dual 6.5-inch woofers for bass that can hold up to the strongest soundtracks. And the rear-firing Flowport vent adds oomph to the bass, while included foam inserts allow you to tune the port for best results at any position in the room.

Buttoned-down British style

As opposed to the strikingly attention-getting curves of Bowers & Wilkins’ top models, the 603 stands serene in any room, with attractive matte black or white finish and invisible magnetic latches for display with or without the speaker grille. A plinth and floor spikes are included for stability, and dual binding posts offer the flexibility to connect separate amp channels for the highs and lows.
