Customer Reviews for Bose SoundWear Companion Wearable Ear-Free Speaker (Black)
I love to listen to music loud. I find that I do not need to turn this up as loud as I normally do with earbuds because it hangs around my neck. I get all the sound I want!
When I am out walking and excersizing I like this better as I can still "hear" the other people and vehicles coming up behind me yet I am still in my own world.
The battery life on this is incredible and the fact that I can buy a skin to the change the color on the soundwear speaker means I will never tire of it ( as if) and be able to color co ordinate it if the mood or whim strikes me!
I wanted to like this. I did. And I do. But I didn't want to love this....and I do!!
Bose hit another one out of the park!
If there is a CON to this it is that I wear this SO much during work outs and yard work that I have perspired on it and I wonder how to get the perspiration out of the cover and if it will eventually hurt the unit itself.
Bose says a little sweat or a lot of sun are ok on this little unit. I want to share it with my friends and family, but will need to purchase that separate cover first before I do just because. Then again, I may never let it out of my hands again!!
No bother! I still won't be without this amazing unit!!
I was impressed by the quality, but unfortunately doesn't have a good purpose. It's great to use near people you're okay with being highly aware you're listening to music. It's not a private or very discreet listening device - in fact, it's disruptive.
It's intended to bridge the gap between listening to great music near your ears without shutting out the rest of the world, which was its intended purpose and it was executed well. I thought that it'd also be nearly inaudible to those nearby while pumping a beam of sound waves only your ears could hear, but that's not the case.
Long story short, this does its job of keeping outside ambience listenable, however it does not keep your music private.
This doesn't mean I wouldn't buy this if I could though. I just can't use this the way I had hoped - on a bus full of people without being completely isolated from the world.
Sound quality - is very good. The sound is full and crisp. It is important to note that the sound isn't as immersive as pair of earbuds or cans and as such it takes some getting used to. It is what you'd expect though, somewhere between good external speakers and earbuds/cans. The sound defintely grew on me the more I wore speaker. I was leary of the speakers being able to produce a deeper bass sound but I've actually had to turn down the bass setting in the Bose Connect app to keep the sound balanced.
Durability - seems solid. I obviously haven't dropped them on purpose to see how they would hold up but they feel well built. They flex easily and do not give any indication that they would snap at all. I wrestled with them taking the cloth cover off to get a look under the hood and they flexed about without any issue. The cover itself stretches just enough so it fits quite snug but can still be removed and spot cleaned or replaced with another color.
Ease of Use/Compatibility/Setup - This is an area where less is more. If you have another Bose product you are already familiar with the Bose Connect app that has evolved to "just work". If you've not used the Connect app, you download the app and it will provide a product tour in lieu of a written or online manual, although you can still get instructions online and there is aa quick start guide included in the box. After going through the product overview the Connect app with help you pair the speaker with your bluetooth device. Boom, done. You really don't need to open the Connect app after that as your music will play through your music player of choice. I'm currently listening on a Nexus 5x using amazon Music and everything works perfectly. As far as ease of use, if you've previously used any in ear/can speakers with controls on the device than you are good to go. Nothing new to learn and again less is more when it works and it does.
Appearance/design - is classic Bose. Clean, black, sleek, and functional. The cover is soft cloth on top and soft stretched leather(pleather maybe) on the back where they rest on your neck. The Bose moniker on the top center of the device but it is subtle and unassuming.
The not as good(Nothing is really "bad")
The charging port. This would be my biggest complaint but I'm not sure that I have a solution other than what the folks at Bose came up with. The port is located under the cover after you pull the zipper back just a little bit to access it. This seems to be the best option as it keeps the port and the speaker covered. The downside with this though is that in low light and even just in general it can be difficult to get the charging plug in easy. This isn't a huge issue as battery life is very good but it is an issue. I can see this being less of an issue when USB C becomes more ubiquitous.
While this speaker provides for the listener to be aware of their surroundings, it does mean that others are going to hear your music. I had hoped it would be more subtle but I've found that at a comfortable listening level for me, my family in the same room can hear the music. If you are in a room with a door closed or an office with a door closed you are going to be ok. I don't think it would be serviceable for public transportation or a cubicle setup.
The sound takes some getting used to compared with other mediums. The sound also does change some based on how you are sitting or walking as your shoulders shrug and relax. It isn't significant but it is there. I have adapted comfortably to both of these within a few hours of use.
Lastly, the design of fitting around the neck isn't for everyone. It again takes some getting used to. I can't see any other setup being more comfortable than the ay Bose has it setup. It can rest near your collarbone which may be an issue for some people. If you find the zipper is resting uncomfortably, make sure you tuck it into the flap where it rests when pulled up all the way and it will be more comfortable. I had my 6 and 9 year old kids try the speaker on as well and they both said it was comfortable and they enjoyed wearing and listening to it. Keep in mind too that the speaker isn't designed for active workouts as it will bounce around. Walking, sitting, and trotting to another room in the house or out to check the mail is fine though.
To finish where I started I will reiterate that I'm quite happy with the SoundWear Companion and would recommend them without reservation.
QC30 are my daily headphones that I love, but Soundwear speaker is something that I can listen to music and safely walk my dogs and be aware of my surroundings. Now we need a hard travel case for it :-)
Everybody at Bose should be proud of what they do for us. Keep up the good job Bose!
They are great to listen to music (Pandora) while doing other pc work and monitoring for incoming calls. The sound quality is great and your voice over the phone is also high quality, so nice for business calls when working at your desk
The only item I would fault is the placement of the control buttons. Being placed on the outside edge of the Soundware makes keyboard 'strokes' like pushing two buttons at once (mute a phone call) very difficult. If the buttons were on the inside edge of the Soundware it would be so much easier. Not a deal breaker however.
But another great BOSE product either way!
Man I tell ya, Bose out did themselves on this one!
I would be remiss if I didn’t add that I own 901’s down to 201’s, computer speakers, Wave Radio’s etc, and this is by far my (so far) my Favorite item from Bose!!!
Hey look, buy the system, with the return policy of Bose it’s simple to return. What do you have to lose?
Came extremely well packaged however every product we have ever received from Bose came extremely well packaged. First impression is solid, well built, and interesting.
I Touched the ON button and the system voice announced a 50% battery. Without touching any other buttons, to my knowledge, a voice announced, "connected to Dave's iPhone". I use my iPhone for music in our vehicle, my iPhone was still connected to a music service and the SoundWear picked up the music and began playing music with incredible deep rich sound.
I have the QuietControl 30 headphones, I assumed the controls were similar so I used the SoundWear controls in the same manner and the system worked flawlessly.
