Customer Reviews for Bose Companion 20 Multimedia Speaker System (Silver)
So I mostly listen using Headphones on my PC setup (Sony MDR-Z7M2 with S.M.S.L M500) BUT using these with same DAC when I don't feel like using headphones...WOW. Was again pleasantly surprised. They ARE too bass heavy (and muffled some) at default for me but with a slight EQ adjustment, more than acceptable to me. For reference I have Yamaha A-S3000 with Cambridge Audio CXN V2 and CXC, as well as a Cambridge audio AVLA TT Turntable paired with a set of Martin Logan Electromotion ESL X speakers (no sub) in my main 2 channel listening setup. To that they are not even close (as expected)...but for gentle to moderate listening again I think they are worth every penny. My speaker cables alone in my 2 channel setup cost twice what these cost and for the money they are WELL worth it in my opinion.
Excellent sound, minor LED failure doesn't detract
Bought these over a year ago from JL in store. Excellent sound and pleased that I have separated the technology (bluetooth wireless) from the speakers. They are simple analogue active speakers and can be used anywhere as an active speaker set e.g. TV with any AUX cable. The controller is excellent for minor volume adjustments whilst working (they sit either side of the monitor). I use them for all volume when making video calls. Sadly the white LED on the controller failed. It's an expensive fix and I can't be bothered so they lose a star for that.
I am a strong believer in the idea of getting what you pay for. BOSE let me down this time. The clarity of the sound is very good, and I really like the control pod and being able to plug in other devices, but I listen to music on my pc quite often and the lack of bass is immediately obvious and frustrating. I've gotten used to it and will keep them for now (because of how much I paid). I came to the website to see if there was a subwoofer option or add on. wishful thinking. I'll continue buying BOSE products but NEVER AGAIN without trying it out first.
Hands down the best speaker system I've ever used!
Firstly, the speakers have excellent build quality, including the small volume dial. The speakers look excellent on a shelf around my monitor and barely take any counter space, which was the main reason I bought these. Onto the sound; firstly these feature a sound relocation feature so that the sound either gives a surround illusion or that with default applications it appears to come out of the middle, which is ideal for movies and gaming. The treble output on these is very high quality, and the mids are just high enough to not sound excessive. The bass for speakers of this form factor with no subwoofer is insane but with rap or hip hop music may not be what some listeners are looking for as the bass is not excessive. Still though, these speakers do their job as a groundbreaking product with a very immersive listening experience in them.
It's been around 5-6 years since I own these speakers, the quality is just amazing, and they still work almost perfectly (1 wire for the left speaker is sensitive and if you slightly move it then it wont play on the left speaker but other than that its perfect).
Perfect for Zoom, WebEx and all virtual interactio
When my office moved to my home due to the pandemic, I needed to upgrade my home office. This system is perfect, with most valued feature being the volume control at my fingertips, within easy reach. Thought I would need a woofer. I don’t. Sound is fabulous.
I haven’t had a stereo for years. These are the only sound system i need. Connected to my iMac, i use them for music, streaming tv and video con calls. As always, great Bose sound quality and the volume “puck” sits quietly on the edge of my desk.
So, like many, my home office has become my main office, and I wanted to improve the sound for Zoom and other conference calls. The best feature of this product is the pod that controls volume -- it's right there in front of you, and you don't have to reach for anything. And the sound is amazing. I thought I wood need a bass woofer (not available on this system), but sound is just amazingly Bose.
I've been a Bose fan for more than 25 years, but clearly, there seems to be an issue with these speakers as too many people have had the exact same experience. I bought the Bose Companion speakers about five years ago and they worked really well. In general, I was very happy with my purchase. However, about 6-9 months ago, the right speaker started to sound distorted, especially for any music or audio with heavier bass sounds. At first I figured I got my use out of them and I would just buy another set, but at what I paid for these, they should have lasted much, much longer! I also noticed that on the Bose website, several other reviewers mentioned having the same issue and I also noticed that the store I bought mine at also has some bad reviews for this product with the EXACT same issue! This leads me to believe that this is a design flaw and that depending on the amount of use, the product will fail and much earlier than it should given the cost.
I have these speakers for sometime now and during guarantee period and for the second time gave trouble, was distorting only one, wish they stopped selling and assembling their products in China. Cheap labour + Cheap Quality = Poor performance ??
Got one of the speakers replaced during its warranty period as it was jarring as if it was torn. Service was done at Andheri Mumbai service center. After replacement it worked for a month and then the same problem repeated. Fed up with such service. Will never buy a bose again after the quality issues faced. Absolutely not worth the price paid for.
I have used this speaker system on other computers and it worked fine. I recently purchased a Windows 10 laptop and now all I get when hooked up is a hum. The speakers are in excellent condition so I cannot understand why I cannot get audio and at least some assistance from Bose.
to be honest, I love these speakers. They replaced an older set of bose PC speakers that were smaller, and initially I was worried about the larger design...it didn't feel as solid as my old ones. But the sound quality is amazing, and the deep tones from these is much broader then in my older set.
The only reason this gets 3 stars is my odd setup. my speakers are up on a shelf above my PC desk, and the power/volume control cord is only about 4 inches long or so. that's it. So if I want to adjust the volume via the real solid and well designed volume control, I have to stand up and reach behind my PC.
Bad choice, and it's such a simple thing it drives me crazy. Give us a longer cord, or even offer an extension cord! of course, the one thing that they design bad, they also put their proprietary connector on it So you can't just go to the store and buy an extension for it...and they they don't offer one in their store. I'd buy it, seriously. but no...
It may seem extreme to drop 2 stars for that, but it's such a stupid limitation to have on such an amazing set of speakers. Cmon Bose, you can get another 20$ out of me if you make an extension cord. But instead you get a bad review. sad.
I wish i could leave negative rating, specially after speaking a so call manager from overseas. no bass what so ever, it sound more like a over sized tweeter. the sound is terrible. i have over 20 boce items. this item is the worst and after today, i do not think i will be buying anything from bose anymore.
I’ve only had these over the past weekend. I bought these along with a Logitech Z906 to compare. Apples to Oranges, but I ended up deciding to keep the Bose because of the size, simplicity of use, and overall sound quality. They have a very open and dimensional sound at the low and higher volume range. If you are looking for a simple 2.0 desktop setup with premium build quality and full sound, these are hard to beat comparing to what’s out there in the price range.
ABSOLUTELY LOVE Bose for the sound quality & their advance tech.... making it easy to plug in or to BT with ease ! Have the Companion unsure which series, quite old now... unfortunately Due to Moving a lot, I was forever wrapping up the cords to move the music, room or house. This eventually frayed the cord the the control pod ! Understandable though, thought I was always over the top with Caring for my babies ! I’ve kept them safe for a few years now waiting to find another Sound Pod which is affordable!
I have bought these speakers for my new iMac Pro, previously had Companion 2 Series III, and I am very very happy with them. Companion 2s, in my opinion, looked very ugly and did not compliment my clean Mac setup. On the other hand, Bose companion 20s offer very rich sound, the best of any PC/Mac speakers that I ever owned, and although I am not entirely happy with the power that the speakers give, I am very happy for everything else. Puck works awesome, very nice experience in turning them on/off and volume rocking, not so happy with the price I've paid ether, but I got everything that I've wanted for the best computer speakers. I trust in Bose and I will stay with them for the future :D
Recommendation for all Mac users that want the best speakers, that look good, and with less cable jungle! Cheers!
I purchased my Companion 20's in early 2013 and it is almost 2020. This speaker has not lost it's luster one bit. The unit is aesthetically pleasing and still relevant, granted it's an older speaker. The sound is beyond impressive for something it's size. I'm more than likely going to buy a second pair for my gaming PC soon.
Living in poverty so long, I didn't know music could sound so good! My health is so bad, with no hope of getting treatment without a ton of money, that I'm lucky to be alive every day. So I thought, why not, and found a way to finance these speakers. I know, sad that I have to finance something less than $500... Also, to have good sound, along with good bass, for a computer setup, almost always requires that 3rd giant speaker for the bass. I had even tried a couple of those before these, and these wound up sounding even better than the ones with three speakers! There are quite a bit of wires, but when getting a sound setup for a desktop computer or a laptop? If you want the best possible sound quality, that takes up the least amount of space? Then you can stop searching, because these speakers would be it, in my opinion of course. There may be something I just never found. If there is though, I can't imagine that they would sound much better, or cost any less.
These speakers has outstanding sound, which they are hook up to my iPhone and television. I use headphones connected to the speakers, which works well. I use RCA wire in which they are gold plated to obtain top quality sound and solid connection.
Bose companion 20 multimedia computer speakers: I bought these speakers over a year ago and I'm not so happy that I did. I listened to music with them utilizing my computer a lot before the power cord failure. The design is ok and they don’t require much space for placement. Setup was relatively simple but the amount of cord in back of the speakers got in the way of other things setting around them. I purchased the silver colored ones because they were more appealing to me than any of the other colors. The amount of volume that you actually get out of these speakers is pretty clear, mostly highs but very little bass when it comes to sound. These companion 20 speakers didn’t replace any old speakers but the cost as compared to the excellent competitors available according to the quality is a little on the too expensive side for me. I would not recommend these particular speakers for the budget conscious consumer that is expecting sound on the amazing level because you might be a little disappointed. There were zero compatibility issues pertaining to these speakers and I even connected them directly to my smart television a few times. The accessories that come with the speakers do facilitate full setup and complete operation, although my power cord failed after one year and I’ve yet to find an exact replacement for this particular brand. PROS: Well built speakers, nice color in the silver, good space saver option CONS: Expensive compared to viable competitors, low quality accessories
These speakers produce nice bass and crisp sound. I have owned these speakers for five years and they still perform at an excellent level. The price has remained the same, but I believe that these speakers are worth the price.
I have had Bose Companion speakers for over 5 years and have to report they are the best solution for home / office / apartment environments possible. I drive them from my Apple iMac and enjoy Pandora all day long. The sound quality is terrific and the companion pod is perfect for muting and volume control. Ultimate control for remote worker activity.
Just wow, what a sound of these little speakers and they look awesome. Really like the control pod, very easy to use. Always had cheaper(and better they say) speakers on my desk, not anymore. Thank you Bose for these excellent speakers.
I personally love this new series of PC speakers. I had the older set from Bose for many years, they finally gave out, and I was unsure initially of moving up to these larger casings (the previous ones were much more compact). But I have no complaints. the sound from these is stellar, better then the older series and worth the extra space! These speakers lost a star only because the volume control node (which I love its function) has a very short cord connecting it to the speaker set, making it really difficult to set the speakers up if you have a different setup. My speakers are at the top of a small bookshelf atop my desk. with the short cord. I can't place it anywhere convenient for me to use, so it's usefulness is drastically cut down. And they currently have no extenstion cords to lengthen this connection. Bad forethought IMO, and somewhat odd for such a nice set of speakers.
I do editing video, it's my job, listening lot of music and style, i need good speakers, but also speakers that not lying and save space, for a good price, Bose made the miracle, stand beauty on my desk, enjoy it every day, good choice and powerfull
Everything Bose Sounds great and this is no exception. I don't recommend this speaker for a person that want a super deep sound or a explosive sound system. This system is made to enjoy good music with no more than 1 or 2 meters of distance. Instrumental music, new age and classics like Frank Sinatra sounds very natural and spaced. Companion 20 is special for use with a computer in a desktop.
Bought it in 2013, very happy with them till last year in 2017 suddenly the left Chanel speaker was distorting, company policy is not to repair, they replaced the speaker but as of today 29th. Dec 2018 same problem has started again, think company needs to take serious veiw in this issue and come out with a quality solotion
Bought these speakers for my computer last week when my old pair gave up the ghost. Slowly but surely have now replaced all media-related speakers with Bose kit - TV, music, PC etc - for one very good reason. Quality. All the kit I have - Lifestyle 48, Wave radios, Soundtouch links etc - is superb. Sound quality is stunning, build quality likewise, installation and operation is intuitive and simple. A little pricey for sure - but what price this level of quality? Why would you use anything else?
I own many Bose products, from my original late 70’s floor speakers to the Soundlink III Bluetooth speaker. Sadly, this Companion 20 system has ruined, if not completely ended, my relationship with the Bose company. I purchased this Companion 20 system alongside my new Dell computer in January 2016, as I wanted to treat myself to exemplary PC speakers for once. They were sleek, easy to setup and sounded great. They have been used less than regularly over the last 2.5 years, as I don’t tend to watch YouTube much and prefer music through headphones. Everything was great, until the Control Hub just stopped responding. The whole PC is connected to a power surge protector, and everything else is working fine, so I have no reason to suspect anything except the Control Hub itself. I contacted tech support through the Bose website, and they emailed me some instructions for performing a product reset. No change. Called support. Their help was to repeat the product reset. No change. The $250 speakers that I hardly used are out of warranty. Tech support offered a new Control Pod for $80 or so. I don’t intend to throw good money at bad. Without the Control Hub, the speakers are useless, how ridiculous is that as a design!?! The Control Hub, which is widely criticized for being temperamental, is the lynchpin rendering a $250 speaker system useless. From looking at them, they are brand new very-expensive paperweights for my desk. Quality companies stand behind quality products; Bose used to be one of those companies. I could not be more disappointed in this purchase or more jaded with my Bose customer experience. Buyer BEWARE!
I've had them for a few months now. One word, "WOW" BOSE all the way. Amazing lows and highs. I love how they equal out the sound automatically. 5 stars all the way across the board. Perfect for some nice Jazz !!!
My Companion 20 Multimedia Speaker System is by far, the most superb computer speakers I have used. Every note, chord, sound, voice is carried throughout my office; which is essential as I use this for telecommunication and conference listening, and lectures. Ease of setup is practically mindless. And when listening to my favorite tunes, and social media, I am beyond impressed with the sound quality. Bose always does it right!!
These are great speakers with great sound for the size but the whole system is dependent on the control pod which is very finicky and has stopped working on me twice now. It takes hours of plugging and unplugging to get the control pod working again.
I used to have Logitech speakers and they were good ( until they went wrong) . Looked at some of the reviews for speakers and these were on top . I 1st thought blimey...... expensive. But decided to give them a go. WOW , I am glad I did. You get a great sound out of them. Very easy to set up and use.
