Astell & Kern A&norma SR15 Portable Music Player (Dark Gray)

From the earliest iPod days, music lovers have been smitten with the concept of carrying their entire collection in their pocket. But squeezing your music so small meant sacrificing sound quality. No longer: Today’s top players match home systems spec for spec. Take the A&norma SR15 premium portable. Astell & Kern engineered the SR15 to superbly reproduce every nuance of the latest, highest resolution music files in virtually every available format. The leading-edge dual digital-analog convertor chips (DACs) are what supplier Cirrus Logic calls “MasterHIFI,” with vanishingly low distortion and noise and incredibly wide dynamic range. A quad-core CPU enhances both the audio processing power and the touch screen’s responsiveness. The display is high resolution and angled askew, part of the quirky design typical of Astell & Kern players. The sculpted aluminum body has a solid, substantial feel that nestles naturally in the palm and perfectly positions the controls. With Wi-Fi and Bluetooth built in, the SR15 is network and stream ready. Via USB, it becomes a music storage device for your home system, or acts as an external DAC for your PC. And with 64GB internal memory, and up to 400GB more via microSD card, you can truly carry your collection without compromise. That’s why, in its review, proclaims the SR15 “a very high-quality product with super build, a unique design, and genuine audio ability.”

Packs serious PC power

Audiophiles make a great deal out of the choice of DAC chips in their digital gadgets, whether home players or portables. The SR15 starts with not one but two ICs from major manufacturer Cirrus Logic. That company christened its latest low-power, high performance chips “MasterHIFI,” to signal crystal clear reproduction and impressive distortion, crosstalk, noise and dynamic range specifications. To that Astell & Kern adds a quad-core central processor, similar to the type found in today’s fast PCs, for improved audio processing power and an instantly responsive user interface.

Plays any file you’ve got

Today’s high-resolution audio files are an alphabet soup of acronyms – but what you need to know is that many can faithfully reproduce every nuance of the music. And they exceed the specifications for standard CDs, sometimes by a sampling-rate factor of four or more. The SR15 is compatible with them all, and decodes the majority of them bit-for-bit.

Partners with your PC

External DACs for computers also are popular these days; acting as an external sound card, they take the PC’s music files and decode them with greater fidelity. The SR15 can serve that same role, so not only can you easily transfer music files from your Mac or Windows PC, you can also stream them directly through the SR15 and right into your ears. It’s all done with a simple USB connection, cable included. (Driver software is a free download.)

Looks odd, feels natural

Reviewers and users often call Astell & Kern’s sculpted designs “quirky,” but they are shaped with purpose. The company believes that by angling the screen slightly in the case, it will look straight when you hold it naturally in your hand. The askew sides are sized to nestle comfortably in your palm and allow your fingers to grasp easily. The touch screen’s main controls are duplicated along the sides of the case, with transport buttons and volume knob, for fingertip access. And the case’s aluminum-and-glass construction is both solid and attractive, with a shifting sense of reflective depth as you move the unit around.

Stick these in your ears

You don’t want to pair a premier player such as the A&norma with those giveaway buds from your smartphone. The SR15 demands headphones of equally high quality, so far as your budget can accommodate. Want a few ideas? Start with these from Audeze, a set from Focal, or your choice of Sirens-of-Song buds from Astell & Kern itself. Or you can peruse our entire collection of premium headphones. Feel free to experiment: Remember, you always have a 60-day guarantee with World Wide.

Astell Kern Anorma Sr15 Portable Music Player
Purchase during presale in June, Received as fast as possible and great service from WWS. Unit was defective though (Bluetooth couldn't stay connected) so return for refund and ordered another one. This one is better but Bluetooth is still balky, disconnects at times and has very weak range. In particular you will notice this when active (fast walking that I do daily, if I am really moving my legs quickly and unit is in my pocket it will periodically disconnect) Also, the sound level on Bluetooth is acceptable but hardly what I would call loud. Corded the volume level is much higher. That said, a pair of Bower and Wilkens PK's with HD Bluetooth is a thing of beauty to experience.

That said the interface is good, the sound is superb and it is well worth the money even with the quirky Bluetooth performance. The sound has a tremendous soundstage and clarity - instruments became newly discovered and depth and range of the sound is noticeable and impressive. That said, the performance differs greatly as expected depending on the source - Polish a turd its still a turd but with a good source file the result is amazing. You really wonder how you could have missed all the intricacies that suddenly jump out at you (it a really pleasant way).

Hopefully the Bluetooth issue is a software issue that can be improved and rectified - it is my only negative in an otherwise superb product. 4 stars because of the Bluetooth, if that gets fixed its 5 stars all the way
